Word from the Mouth: Respect the Sub Cap Limit! edition

Word from the Mouth: Respect the Sub Cap Limit! edition

I hope you were all lucky enough to avoid the rain. If you weren’t, then you got to see that the rain wasn’t good for the field and it’s now hanging on for its life. I know it’s not that late in the year and it will have time to grow back, but we better not get too many more rainy Saturdays.

I don’t know how it was in Laval on Sunday, but it was hot in Brossard. I was looking forward to eating my Chinese food and watching College football Saturday night, but me being the old man that I am was passed out by 9 pm (ed’s note: I was out by like 8, so who’s the old man now?). This meant I missed all the games on opening weekend.

With all the hype around the Colorado Buffaloes, can Shedeur Sanders really go number 1 or will a team let Travis Hunter play both ways like he has since high school once turning pro? I can tell you now that Shedeur will not go number 1 and no team is going to let a player play both sides of the ball. Just imagine that player when it comes to contract negotiations, do you pay him for 2 different positions or just 1?

Only 4 more days until we see the KC Chiefs start their title defense against the Baltimore Ravens. If I was picking the game, I’d lean towards Lamar and the Ravens, it’s week 1 no one is laying a finger on him.

Recap

D1

Missed out on all the games this week as you were all over at Arthur Therrien all day and I was Darcy McGee. Maybe I’ll catch a few next weekend.

D2

Phoenix vs RawSauce (19-14)

This was not a pretty game by any means and had to with it starting to rain. Francis had a big game hauling in 11 balls for 67 yards. All this did was protect the ball and limit the number of plays. JF once again played his ass off scoring 2 TDs and picking off 3 passes. Ludovic played like he normally does by spreading the ball around and taking what was open, but a few (4) got away from him and were picked. The one Justin got where he and Gab both had the ball and was ruled a pick might not have been. Late in the game Phoenix held a 5-point lead and needed to waste the rest of the game to get their first win of the year. Phoenix wasn’t able to gain a first down and punted it away. This left time for Ludovic to try and win the game. After a big run, Ludovic connects with Gab down the sideline where he out played Justin for the ball to gain 27 yards. With under a minute left Ludovic still had time, but he was sacked on first down a big incomplete then on third down the ball sailed high, and this let JF get his third and final pick of the game.

Division 3

Iron Wolves vs Ducks (24-39)

Before the game I was looking at Ducks team and was thinking where you attack on offense or who do you take away on defense, and I couldn’t figure it out. Then I was like, Jon will pick them apart and make it look easy and Josh will throw something at Dave to get him off his game. The game couldn’t have started better for Iron Wolves with Josh getting a pick in the endzone and taking points off the board. On the first play of offense, Jon threw a deep pass to Alexis who was able to pull it in by his fingertips, but was caught at the 5 before Josh capped the drive on the next play to go up 6. The lead didn’t last long as coverage was blown, and Antoine scored an easy 45-yard TD. Iron Wolves were able to respond with a long drive to take a 12-6 lead that lasted until the second and the rain started to let up. Once the field got sloppy the running of Dave was all the difference. I mean it wasn’t like he had any huge runs, it was that once he started to move around, this allowed his guys to find holes and had defenders look at him and not the receivers.

Division 4

Blue Badgers vs Action Squad (19-24)

I’m just as shocked as the rest of you. How did this happen? Let me tell you. Blue Badgers looked like they didn’t miss a beat from the last time they played a regular season game. Oliver relied on Jérémie to move the ball before he ran it in from 10 yards out to go up 6. After forcing a turnover on the first drive, this time around Pascal picked off Gold on first down and scored to give the Blue Badgers a 12-0 lead. After battling back and Blue Badgers still being up, they looked to chew the clock and take the win. After using up 5 minutes of clock, on fourth down and goal Oliver had his pass go well out of bounds and turned it over on downs. It took Gold 1 pass to Michael for 40 yards out to tie it up at 18. This is where Gold made a dumb mistake and threw the ball out to the sideline with no zip on it where Jérémie was able to make a break on it and took the ball back to give his team a 1-point lead with 4 minutes left. After being forced to punt with 90 seconds left in the game, the Blue Badgers just needed to get a stop. Play after play Gold was able to pull something out as he moved the ball all the way down to the 1-yard line with 1 play left. Just like he did to tie it up, Michael was able to score and win the game.

Division 5

514 vs Ass-Been (6-25)

I don’t know how you show up with only 4 players and expect to win. Well 514 started to play with 4 before Gold came in to sub part way through the first half. I will point out that Eric Thibeault is new at QB and played his best game of the season so far, but if he had more experience, he would have picked 514 apart early when they were only 4 and even once they were 5. Lesniak on offense depended on Gold to move the ball, but with him being banged up he wasn’t much help. Eric spread the ball the whole game with 3 players catching 3 or more balls and 3 different players scoring TDs. When Eric and this team improve, they will be formidable opponents for teams.

Phoenix vs Ass-Been (19-0)

This was the second game of the day for Ass-Been and the first game of the season for Phoenix so this could have gone either way. It also started raining for this game and didn’t stop. Eric Thibeault had a much harder time playing against 6 players, especially with those players knowing what to do and where to be. Phoenix started the game with a TD score capped off by David from the 1 to put Phoenix up 6-0. After that score, not much happened except both teams punting it back and forth until Phoenix got the ball back with 10 minutes left in the second half, Where Yann was able to score from 19 yards out and making at least 3 defenders miss tackles on his run. After another stop on defense, Phoenix got the ball back and moved it all the way inside the red zone. This is when my favorite play of the game happened. Chrissy and the defender both fell on the play. I was able to look left and left some more while in my head I’m hoping Chrissy gets up and goes out to the right corner where it was all open. She did see it and she did get up and she scored a TD on a play she thought she was out of once she fell. She should have been out of the play, but Ass-Been didn’t rush, so I had all day to see where I wanted to go.

Slicks vs PickSixers (27-12)

Both defenses didn’t look good as neither of them were able to stop the other QB from completing most of their passes. Yeah, they were all short passes, but you should be able to jump a few of those passes or at least knock 1 or 2 away. This was the first time I got to see William Shlien play QB and he really was better than I expected, considering the defense he was up against. His best throw came on their opening drive when he connected with Brendan Melnik for a 42 yards TD down the sideline, but after that it looked like hunting season with all those ducks. For Slicks, Luca looked great throwing the ball and not running on every other play like he had in the past. Okay, so Luca ran 10 times and only threw 22 passes, so he did run every second play it seems, but I’ll give him a pass (ed’s note: what a pun!) this time around because of the rain and the fact he could have run more but threw the ball instead. This was the last game of the day and everyone was fed up with the rain, so both teams elected to go short and waste the clock between plays and limit the numbers of plays and chances for mistakes.

Women’s

Sorry ladies, I wasn’t around much this weekend, but I hope to catch more of the division and watch as it grows and develops over the year.

That is all I have for you this week, but if you want or need more MFL news, wait until Wednesday when MFL Total Access with Terry & Will gets released.

Studs & Duds

With 3 weeks in the books and more games being played this week, I had a better selection of players that balled out and a few with the stats they put up or didn’t and should have stayed home this weekend as it might have helped their team a bit more.

Studs

D1

- Andrew Grant 3 TDs 93 yards on 5 catches and 1 pick on defense.

D2

- Jean-François Lawrence 2 TDs and 3 picks.

D3

- Christian Pedroza 2 TDs and 2 picks.

D4

- Jordan William Matte scored 3 TDs and had 1 sack.

Women’s

Duds

D1

- Pocket Rockets for losing to KOLB when they had 4 picks on defense and only 1 on offense.

D2

- Respect for breaking cap and taking an L because Ali said he was under CAP, and it wasn’t checked.

D3

- Mark Selvadurai 1 catch 4 yards and no defensive stats

D4

- Blue Badgers for allowing Action Squad to drive down and score as the clock expired when all you needed to do was get a first down.

D5

- Matthew Betnesky 6 catches 11 yards.

Women’s

- Aryane Leboeuf going 3 of 32 with 3 picks will land you on my list.

There you have it, my Studs and Duds for week 3. If you’re expecting to see your name up here, then you better step your game up because everyone else did.

Look, my rankings aren’t perfect and you probably think it’s because your team isn’t on my list. If you want your team on my list, win some games and show me that my rankings need to have your team on it.

Final Thoughts

I already know Saturday is going to be a long day for me, but I’m glad to be having a game before 4:30 in the afternoon. This means I’ll be sharp (ed’s note: “sharpness” is relative) and not throw as many picks. Sorry to give the sad news to RawSauce, but I’m bringing my A game, so you better watch out.

Friday night going to get some new ink on my body and yes, I know I’m running out of space. Who doesn’t want to get matching tattoos and even little Nick is getting another one as well. It is a tradition to go to the Brassiere afterwards, but stupid Nick wants to go to the casino (ed’s note: stupid Nick!), but that’s not happening.

I know some of us will miss all the good week 1 games in college (ed’s note: Notre Dame plays at 7:30, so it’s all good), but at least there are 2 games at night that are interesting. I have Bangkok Kung Fu all left to say today and will leave it as that. But before I go, remember we are playing a game for fun, so go out have some and don’t take it too seriously. Thanks, and see you Saturday.

Word from the Mouth: Jabberwocky! edition

Word from the Mouth: Jabberwocky! edition

We all made it through another week of games, but some teams and players are really pushing the limits and are lucky this is a noncontact league or else I can guarantee a few of you are getting laid out. I won’t give names, but if you read that and thought what you did wasn’t that bad, then I’m talking about you.

We all know that springtime everyone is just looking to get out and find a hot hookup for the summer with winter coming faster than we like, so it’s time to update your MFL profile and info. This way we can start an MFL dating site and everyone can get their fill of football and boys and/or girls as well.

I’m saying this as a joke, but I’m sure this can happen. We could set up ground rules like if you slide into that person’s DMs and you’re playing that week, loser has to buy dinner.

I’ll say it now, so I don’t have to say it 500 times at the field: I have a GF and her name is Sunshine and I’m not allowed talking to other women. She beats me, lol.

(ed’s note: is it just me, or is Kevin really just starting to go off the deep end? I was going to edit out basically his entire intro here, but I think it’s good to keep so there’s a record of his slip into madness)

Laval kicked off this week and I was only able to see the last game and both of those teams were free agent squads, but they both looked good and will not be like a free agent team in Brossard.

This week is going to be interesting with Saturday in Montreal and then Sunday with Brossard and Laval. It should be a fun filled weekend.

We only have 10 more days until the NFL kicks off and I can’t wait. (ed’s note: like, what is that non-sequitur? “We’re playing on Saturday and Sunday, NFL in 10 days”. Right? It’s not just me, right?)

Recap

D1

I Missed out on seeing D1 games this week and all I know was both games came down to the wire.

D2

Phoenix vs Rejects (12-53)

I’ll keep this brief. I played like ass throwing another 5 picks this week which is the reason the score was like it is. Dobbs got plenty of help all game and he had short fields to work with and it seemed like every call went his way as well. Like on his first snap where he pinned the ball with one hand on the ground picked it up and threw a TDs pass to a wide-open player since no one on the defense moved as the ball was on ground (ed’s note: play to the whistle!). Phoenix had issues all day on both sides of the ball. Offensively we would march a bit then I’d throw aa stupid pass and it would get picked and we be back on defense where we missed tackles and coverages all game long. Ali and Eric torched us for a combined 14 catches for 157 yards and 6 TDs. You’re not going to win many games playing like that. I’m not Jabberwockying on the defense as they played 90% of the game. It was all on me and my horrible throwing.

D3

Turf Ninjas vs Blitzing Bastards (33-31)

This game looked to be over by halftime as Turf Ninjas had built an impressive 27-7 lead and when they started the second half with the ball and scored right away it looked to be a runaway until Sanketh started to play smart ball and take the easy throws. After opening the second half with a pick 6, Sanketh kept his head up and his arm loose and as the Turf Ninjas defense started to let up, he was able to move the ball and score some points. What really helped was the defense for Blitzing Bastards stepped up and forced Mat to throw 3 picks on Turf Ninjas next 3 drives. With 2 minutes left and after failing to get their 2-point convert the score was 33-31 for Turf Ninjas. All Mat needed to do was gain a first down and the game would be over, and that’s what happened. I think if the game was 10 minutes longer, that Blitzing Bastards might have pulled off the epic comeback and put a smile on the face of Kris.

D4

Witching Hour vs Binettes (46-6)

Witching Hour is a new team, and they look strong for this division. Albert is playing QB for them and his numbers weren’t bad, the issue for them was dropped balls or balls being a bit out of reach for his guys. The game was 34-0 at half and in the second half Witching Hour took their foot off the gas, but when you’re up that big at half you can’t lose that game.

Slot Machines vs Action Squad (49-0)

It was al Kyle and Eric scoring 7 TDs on their combined 9 catches. Slot Machines might be too good once again for the division they are playing in. Action Squad had no answer and looked to be in rough shape when this game ended.

D5

I wasn’t able to see any of this division, but I hopefully will see some this upcoming weekend.

Women’s

Steeleuses vs Déesses du Drapeau (26-13)

I won’t lie, going in I thought that this was just a warmup game for Déesses du Drapeau before the rematch of last seasons final. I also didn’t know anyone on Steeleuses before the game, but after speaking to a few of them after the game they know what they are doing and how to play the game. Déesses du Drapeau wanted to try something new out and made the switch from Viviane to Daphne and this was the difference in the game. With Daphne being QB there were a few plays that she missed throws on and a few drops from her receivers, but she played well for a first timer. The one thing she will need to learn is not taking a big sack on fourth down. Can’t be done and she needs to just throw it up and hope for the best and if it’s a pick well you just made extra yards for the other team to drive (ed’s note: people say this, but unless it’s a guaranteed sack, sometimes the QB is trying to just avoid the tackle to buy time. I’d rather see if I can make the rusher miss to give me time to get an open receiver than to just throw it up and hope). With Steeleuses being new to the league you didn’t know what you would get, but they can play. Carine is their rusher and was all over Daphne racking up 3 sacks and pressure all game long. Kelly led them with 7 tackles as well as a pick on defense and had 6 catches for 40 yards and 2 TDs on offense. Branda played solidly this week, distributing the ball and take a few shots down field when it was open.

That is all I have for you on recaps. If you want more, which I know you do, look for MFL total Access with Terry & Willie which is out on Wednesday.

Studs & Duds

This week we had limited games and that meant less (ed’s note: fewer) players to pick from and that gives you a better chance of see your named up on my list. Now let’s see who showed up and who is dog water.

Studs

D1

- Jonathan Lyristis scoring 2 TDs on offense while having the hardest job of rushing Steve and getting a sack but also pressure that led to interceptions.

D2

- Ryan Richard Lee scored 3 TDs on 5 catches.

D3

- Justin Salonga 4 TDs and 1 pick thrown but completed 16 of 30 passes for 167 yards and ran once for 11 yards.

D4

- Karmina Asharyzad made 8 tackles, had 3 sacks and at least 3 or 4 batted balls. She didn’t have any offensive stats but was the difference on defense.

D5

- Emilio Ulisse 2 for 4 as a QB with 2 TDs. He caught 3 passes for 33 yards and made 2 tackles and had 1 pick on defense.

Women’s

- Kelly Anania had 5 TDs and 80 yards on 13 catches and she made 8 tackle and had 2 picks on defense in her 2 games played.

Duds

D1

- Joey Notaro 1 catch 6 yards and I get that it was a TD but you’re better than that and with only 7 players and the brothers not being there I expected to see way better numbers.

D2

- Victor Davis this looked like a huge pick up when it happened but if he keeps playing like this then it doesn’t really matter.

D3

- Mat Lacourse for almost giving the game away with all the second half picks.

D4

- Slot Machines for how they finished the game off being up big and still taking shots and trying to score.

D5

- Steven Biddle 5 catches 12 yards. You must make a player miss and get some YAC.

Women’s

- Déesses du Drapeau their defense for game number 2.

There you have it, my list of ballers and those guys and gals who Jabberwockyed the bed this week.

Now to my picks for week 2 and like always they are in bold.

Power Rankings

Last week I did a ranking for everyone, now that we are 1 week in, I’m only doing a top 3 this way I can save on words and not get blasted from Terry or Jon.

I know my rankings aren’t perfect and work still needs to be done on it but as the weeks go on, I will get to know the teams better and who are real contenders and who are frauds. I know you might look at these rankings and wonder how your team isn’t up here it might have something to do with who you played. More games played makes for a better sample size and some new teams will get the benefit where some experienced teams need to prove they are for real.

Final Thoughts

This week all our games are being played at Leber so no need to wonder which field you’re at or having to move locations for a second game. This week it looks like no rain but who knows, there is still 2 more days before Saturday. If you didn’t already know this week Football kicks off with the NCAA week zero as they call it since there are only a few games on the docket. That means from this weekend until mid-February we get to watch real football not that European crap Jon took off to go see. I think he went to learn how to flop and get the call. I can tell you that won’t fly if I’m your official. I know it's not too late yet, but Fantasy football is huge, and we might want to set one up for the league along with a Survivor pool to see who comes out on top. I can tell you one person who won’t win either, and that’s Willie because he forgets to do his line and make his picks all the time with the media picks. I don’t have much more to say but before I go remember we are playing a game so have fun don’t take it too seriously and don’t kill anyone we all have places to be after our games.

Word from the Mouth: Jello Legs! edition

Word from the Mouth: Jello Legs! edition

What a weekend it was for week one of the season. We only had rain for 10 minutes tops and that all happened in my game and the reason why Jason and I combined for ten picks, but other than that it was beautiful out. We also kicked Brossard off and from what I saw on Sunday might be the best it’s been so far. I also hope everyone is excited cause MFL Laval will be kicking off this week and looks like it could be exciting from the teams and players I’ve seen on rosters. Now that the MFL has two remote locations I think that the two champions should play each other at a remote location to see who the best non-Montreal team is. We can make a time slot and have it played finals weekend. Jon and Terry need to make this happen. I know it’s a Sunday league but put it out there I’m sure teams would be cool with it and it’s an extra game they get to play. After walking a total of 42000 steps and playing a game on top of that I’m beat after all those weeks off. My shoulder needs ice, my legs feel like Jello, I can't turn my neck and my back is killing me as well, so anyone still walking and not feeling like crap,  good job to you. Don’t worry Dobbs I’ll be fine by next week and if not I’ll drug myself up just to play like I always have.

Recap

D1

I didn’t have the honour to see the D1 game this week, but I know Willie was there and should know what happened in the game so expect the recap on the Podcast.

D2

Villains vs Nice TDs (38-27)

I won't sugar coat it at all and just tell you how it is. The Villains are a better team this season with Jeremi at QB he gives them the option to run and can throw the ball all over the field at any time. The issue for Nice TDs is that Simon only went to Andrew and Ben and most of Ben’s balls were in the second half. Simon tried to run the same play a few times with Andrew but the defenders on Thunder Buddies (ed’s note: maybe lay off those drugs…)  did a wonderful job of limiting his YAC. The issue for Nice TDs will be their defense. They didn’t get much pressure on Jeremi and they were never able to get a pick, they were always a step late. Can Nice TDs turn it around of course they can, will they? I’m not sure but if the rumors are true then expect a stronger Nice TDs team moving forward.

Phoenix vs Average Joes (37-51)

This game wasn’t particularly good for Phoenix and the score makes it seem closer than it was. Joes dominated the first half when nothing went right for Phoenix and built a 32-12 lead. Second half more of the same bad balls from me (ed’s note: I’m glad you stopped referring to yourself in the third person) at QB leading to picks but the Defense stepped up getting four second half picks and making a game of it. If it wasn’t for the way the opening two drives started for Phoenix, it would have come down to converts. Joes are a good team, and we all knew that going in, the question mark is how good or bad will Phoenix be.

Thunder Buddies vs Double Dippers (35-37)

I won't talk much about this game since Both Terry and Will are Thunder Buddies. I will point out that they had no way of stopping Simon who dominated inside the red zone with 2 TDs and 2 2-point converts.

Respect vs Rejects (30-8)

The way this game started out it felt like Dobbs and his Rejects were going to hang around long enough to pull of the upset. Rejects had issues all day keep drives going with either drops or bad routes and the occasional bad ball, even with all those struggles they were only down 14-0 at half. In the first half you could see that Steve was having issues with the fresh (ed’s note: you mean rookies? freshmen?) players on his team and where they were supposed to be as to where they were. On his opening drive Steve got the ball all the way inside redzone but had three out of four passes dropped in the endzone and the other pass he threw away. After a slow start Steve got rolling and scored on his four next drives before turning the ball over on downs late in the game. The best play of the game for Rejects was a 40-yard run by Dobbs with one play left before half. With the lead in the second half Steve milked the clock and this limited the number of possessions and killed any chance Rejects had it coming back. Rejects scored late to end the game but if they can’t become more consistent then they might struggle all season long.

D3

Drama Club vs CIA Fusion (19-30)

This could have been a game to remember but Drama Club was missing players and then CIA made a change at QB from Jason to Alex. The change at QB made CIA a bit weaker of a team at both QB and WR. Drama Club needed to find a way to keep Alex in the pocket and force him to throw and Greg wasn’t the answer. On the offensive side of the ball Simon needed to do a better job of spreading the ball around and not just going to Nico who had ninety-seven of his 188 yards. As for CIA Alex did a wonderful job of keeping the defense guessing as to what was coming. Alex ran for seventy-five yards and a TD but when Alex did throw the ball it was mostly easy completions to players wide open. Conner was his number 1 target with six catches for eighty-nine yards and 2 TDs.

Sorry Folks I missed seeing any of your teams play, but don’t worry I will get to see some of you play over the season and your games will get coverage.

Wong Dynasty vs Spartans (0-38)

After Wong Dynasty won their first game they looked to keep on rolling. Then they faced a team that knew what they were doing on defense and all those lob passes got knocked away or were picked off. Spartans took control right from the start and only had a little hiccup of back-to-back picks after scoring  on their opening two possessions. JF did an excellent job of spreading the ball and keeping the defense guessing where it was going. Devonte only had four catches for twenty-nine yards but three of his catches were for TDs. The best drive Wong Dynasty had was when they opened the second half with an 8-play drive before it ended in one of Ryan's 6 picks. This game was never close and if Spartans play like this every week don’t be surprised to see them challenge for the top spot in the division near the end of the season.

Women’s

Sorry ladies, just like D4 I couldn’t catch any of your games, but I am planning on it so no need to panic (ed’s note: I’m sure some players lost sleep over this) I’ll be at a few of the division games before the season is over.

That is all I have in the way of recaps. Hope you enjoyed it and maybe you’ll see me on the sideline this week either taking notes as I scout or see how the game plays out.

Studs & Duds

Week 1 in the books and it seemed as if more players wanted to be Duds than Studs this week. I know it's week one and we are all rusty, but I was expecting more players to come and ball the jello out since they had all those weeks off. Instead of getting top performances we got the Australian breakdancer performance. I know I might not be able to do much better but I’m almost 44 years old and I can't bend that way, plus I’m white and I have no rhythm. I tried dancing in Mexico and it’s a No Bueno. If you need proof or want to see someone laugh their ass off ask my Sunshine about it.

Studs

D1

- Jérémi Riendeau-Demers 4 TDs.

D2

- Eric Schiocchet 10 catches 181 yards and 3 TDs in his first game back after a while away.

D3

- Mickael Jandala 4 catches for thirty-nine yards and 1 TD. On defense and why he won this week was his two sacks and a pick six as the rusher.

D4

- Vincent Marotte 3 TDs and four picks in his first game.

D5

- Sébastien Lucas Alzate 9 catches 139 yards and 3 TDs.

Women’s

- Angie Toporowski 7 catches eighty-three yard, 2 TDs on offense and she added a pick on defense as well.

Duds

D1

- Willie for his two picks.

D2

- Kevin for my six picks.

D3

- Alexandre Szaplipski for not understanding as a QB you need to throw the ball not run twenty times in two games.

D4

- Alec De Lafontaine-Jovani threw six picks four to the same player.

D5

- Kevin Gauthier 5 picks and only four completions.

Women’s

- Zuzana Sichova 6 picks in game number 1.

If you’re just expecting to show up and make my list, that isn’t going to happen, but I do take bribes so that one catch for one yard you got this week could make you my stud of the week for the right donation. No in all seriousness you want to make my list do something different, stand out, try and look as good as I do (ed’s note: we all know that’s impossible), and I might just give you a shout out even if you didn’t put up crazy numbers anyway. I go by what the numbers show me unless it's close then I look and see how those numbers were achieved.
