Word from the Mouth: Hall of Fame! edition

Word from the Mouth: Hall of Fame! edition

It looks like we have all made it to the end of the season. There are still teams that are battling it out to secure their playoff spot and at least 1 team hoping and praying for Centurions to win so they can creep in with a 5-5 record.

Thursday night, the NFL began their Hall of Fame enshrinement and used it to kick off to the preseason. To all the Cowboys fans out there let me tell you right now that this isn’t your year. so don’t get your hopes up and get used to seeing your team take a lot of L’s. This year they had the Class from 2020 and 2021 with lots of great players getting in including one of my favorite players and Heisman winner Charles Woodson from Michigan. One thing that really surprises me is that Charles grew up in Ohio and ended up playing for Michigan. If you know anything about college football, Ohio and Michigan are huge rivals and this should have never happened, you can’t cross over to the other side.

Now this past weekend has brought up who belongs in the MFL Hall of Fame 2021. There have been a few talks about who should get in, but it has not been finalized yet but it should be soon, maybe even this weekend when we have our seasonal competition committee meeting. Now would be the best time to bring up any ideas you might have towards changing rules, making the game safer, or any other improvements you or your team might have. You should bring them up ASAP so we can look them over think about and possible vote on the idea. We want to have a few things fixed up and working for the fall season so now is the time for your suggestions.

Recap

Division 1

Holy Trollers vs Centurions (30-36)

This was a game that came right down to the wire and it never should have been that close. Centurions went up big early and looked like they had this game in the bag. Centurions allowed a score with seconds left in the first half and that was more than enough to give the Trollers some life. Second half rolls around and Trollers are pumped and playing well and getting stops on defense. With under two minutes left in the game the Trollers just scored, but needed to get the 2-point convert to tie the game. They get it and the game is all tied and up to their defense to get them the ball back. What do you know, happens like it has all season and the defense crumbles and Centurions score the game winning TD with 9 seconds left.

Moretti Crime Family vs Bitter Boys (22-21) OT

Who would have guessed this game would go to OT? I know I didn’t and no one on the media team did. I don’t know if I’m impressed by Bitter Boys keeping the game so close or embarrassed for Moretti Crime Family for the game being so close. I know Joey wasn’t there this week, but Moretti Crime Family are stacked and have multiple players who can and do play QB, so for the game to end like this is a shocker. For Bitter Boys, I know that Guillaume end up getting hurt in this game and was forced to leave. I can tell you this that if Bitter Boys had Guillaume the rest of the game then Bitter Boys would have had their second upset of the season. Just finished looking over the game recap and how could Mario allow Crime family to score right after they took the lead with 3 minutes left in the game it wasn’t even just a TD it was a 2 point convert as well (ed’s note: they already had the lead with under 3 minutes, they just extended it at that point). After that happened everyone knew once it went to OT that it was over and Crime Family were going to win and they did.

Division 2

OG Panthers vs Outlaws (30-27)

Going into this game both teams knew the winner would most likely finish third in the standings and that Charles was going to be the deciding factor in the game. Yes, Charles was the deciding factor in the game as he played phenomenally, but why after all the bashing of him did he have to play lights out against my team? The game started off great for Outlaws with a pick from Julien and then they scored on that drive followed by a pick 6 from Dave. Outlaws looked like it was going to be a cake walk. Then OG woke up and started to play. This is when Charles started to pick the Outlaws defense apart, a few yards here, a few yards there, a deep pass to the wide open receiver. OG did a great job on converts going for two to make it a 9 point game instead of leaving it at 8. After the game, us real Outlaws (ed’s note: real Outlaws?) talked about the game and we came to a few conclusions as to why and how we lost the game and here they are (ed’s note: conclusions = excuses). Before half with 40 seconds left on fourth down we went for it on a play we have ran 50 times this season and this time around Josh was too close to sideline and ruled out of bounds which would have been a fresh set of downs. Then our defense did something they have all season long and let the receiver get behind them. That is why we felt we lost the game. Now the real reason we lost the game was we got out played by a team that wanted it more than we did. Outlaws need to realize that they aren’t just going to show up and have teams hand them the win, they have to earn it. Everyone counted OG out a long time ago and now look at them, the hottest team in the division.

Honor Game vs Petits Phoques (50-34)

In the battle for first place, Honor Game walked away with the convincing win. After they lost last week to OG, Dave wasn’t having that again this week. I’m sure that Honor Games still had a thing or two to say to the refs, but being up they were probably all nice things. This Dave had his top weapon back in the lineup, the D4 player of the century, after last week’s blowup and he made his presence felt with 3 TDs. To me this was a game that match up wise was never going to favor Petits Phoques. Year after year they get beat by teams with big tall receivers that can all attack the ball and I just don’t know why. They have super athletic players on their roster that all have decent size and can jump. I would have liked to see how they tried to stop both Marvin and Laurent, it’s next to impossible. I’ll tell you right now what it is with Honor Game, they know going in that they are going to score at will and by going for 2 and getting it more often than not it puts way more pressure on their opponent’s offense to try and match them and that is where they get you. Don’t let them get in your head, play your game, and allow Dave and his team to self-implode. I know it’s a lot easier writing it than doing it. When Dave is on, no team in the division will beat Honor Game. They are just too good with too many weapons to beat you with.

Division 3

Deep Threats vs Mustard Tigers (13-32)

Going into this game no one gave Mustard Tigers a shot at winning and then you realize that Svetna and a few other players were missing, but the same could be said for Mustard Tigers who were missing Brian again. It looks like Mustard Tigers got the better of that one. Owie was there again throwing darts and lighting up the scoreboard as he helped keep alive whatever slim hope Mustard Tigers have of making the playoffs. I know we all say this game didn’t mean anything, but when you haven’t played a game in a few weeks turning it on for the playoffs are sometimes too late and the same can be said about wearing yourself out just to make the playoffs to have nothing left once you get there. I feel Deep Threats will be fine going forward.

Average Joes vs Les Tannantes (18-24)

This was the Hype game of the year. If there were 20000 fans on Saturday they would have loved all the big plays that happened and how pumped everyone got after they happened. Again this week Tannantes were missing their QB and had to have someone else to fill in. Watching this game, I didn’t know Vincent wasn’t their QB and he looked good fitting balls into tight holes, avoiding the rush, and getting a little lucky with a few balls. Average Joes made a few bad decisions that at the time weren’t bad calls, but in the end cost them the game. There was a fourth and five with under a minute in the half that Jason ran towards the sideline thinking he could get the first and he didn’t. Once Tannantes had the ball it took a few plays for them to punch in the score and go up by two scores. The second half started well for Average Joes with them taking the opening drive in to make it a six point game. Now it was up to the defense to get a stop and they did on Tannantes next few drives allowing Joes to tie it with under five minutes left. At this point it was whoever wanted it more and it look like Joes were going to get it done until Jason threw a deep post that gets picked off. On what was the last play of regulation Vincent threw a pass to the end zone that was knocked away by a Joe player that somehow found its way into the hands of David for the game winning score.

Division 4

Airborne vs Panaches (19-32)

To tell you the truth, this game was closer than it should have been. Airborne were missing a few players and had Yvan from RawSauce subbing for them and he made a few big plays for Airborne. Panaches got up big in the first half and were just playing the second half not to get hurt. After the game I spoke to a player or two on Panaches and they said that the second half they didn’t try anything new and just wanted the game to be over. For Airborne if they want to improve, they need their players to show up every week. I know Guillaume has gotten better over the years, but every week he is throwing to new players and that isn’t a way to build a championship team. Look at Panaches, they have had their struggles over the years and now it is clicking and they have a good chance to win it all this season.

Titans vs Thunder Buddies (27-60)

In a game that didn’t mean anything to either team since they will face one another in the playoffs, it got ugly. Let me start by pointing out that this wasn’t the Thunder Buddies team Titans will face in the playoffs. Terry wasn’t there to play QB so Jon allowed Steve, or the GOAT as some refer to him as, to throw. Thunder Buddies also had JF subbing for them as well. When you add those two studs and Ben still isn’t allowed to play defense Titans had no chance. I am really looking forward to this match up in the playoffs with their actual teams playing. Jon screwed Titans and everyone, including Terry, knows it. Towards the end of the game when Steve realized the score he was apologizing to the players on the sideline. At least Steve was sympathetic towards them, but Jon should have never allowed this and Terry shouldn’t have asked, especially since it was a meaningless game. I would like to apologize to the Titans on behalf of the league for this being allowed to happen.

Division 5

Los Pollitos vs Mimosa Crew (21-19)

After all those close games, Los Pollitos were able to get their first win of the season. I’m sure that it felt really good. Mimosa Crew looked to seal the game with their finally drive ending in a TD except they left just under two minutes on the clock. The way Los Pollitos offense had looked all day we all figured it was going to end with someone on Mimosa Crew picking the ball off. I don’t know how you can complete 1 pass out of you last 6 plays and win the game. Mimosa Crew defense, after playing so well all game, just flaked and allowed the game to slip out of their hands.

Phoenix vs Gold Rush (21-0)

This was a rematch from the week before and again Gold Rush needed subs. Gold Rush ended up getting Rob to play QB for them, but realistically by this point in the day and after four previous games, Rob was wiped out. There were a few points where it looked like Gold Rush was going to make a game of it, but almost every time they had a big play it was followed up by a big mistake, either a sack or a pick. All day long the combination of Kat and Gab rushing was too much pressure for Rob to handle as he was sacked 5 times and once for a safety. On offense, Phoenix took their time with the ball and drove the field and took a shot when it was open. I was hoping to play the real Gold Rush team his season, but I guess if that’s to happen it will be in the playoffs.

That is it for this week’s recaps, hope you enjoyed.

Top Performances of the Week

Here we are, just one regular season week away from the playoffs and a chance to win the championship. I know everyone is wondering if they did enough to impress me this week, some did and some disappointed me as well. Here are this week’s winners.

Division 1

Offense

This week I went with a player that didn’t have the best stats for the week, but came up clutch down the stretch and OT. I had to go with Danny Aylward. Danny was 20 of 30 for 168 yards, 3 TDs a 2 point convert and a 1 point convert in OT for the win.

Defense

I had to pick between two teammates who both had a huge impact in the game, so I ended up picking Samuel Collette. I know this guy is normally known for his offense, but don’t sleep on his defense guys. This week Samuel had 11 tackles, 2 picks and he returned 1 for 6 points.

Division 2

Offense

In what was one of the biggest games of the week this guy definitely showed up to play. I know most people hate him (ed’s note: I don’t think that’s true), but when you put up numbers like this you know I have to show a little love to the guy, and that guy would be Dave Daoust. Dave was 33 of 44 for 279 yards, 7 TDs, 2 2point converts as well as running twice for 15 yards.

Defense

This is something you don’t see every day. A QB being named player of the week on defense. Well this week Jonathan Plourde gave me no choice. Jon had 3 tackles to go along with his 2 picks and he took 1 back to the house for 6 points.

Division 3

Offense

When I first started looking over the stats to get my winner, I thought I had my player picked out easily, but I kept looking and my player was no longer my player. I came to the conclusion that Dave Brissone is my player this week. Dave had 6 catches for 104 yards and 3 TDs.

Defense

The numbers that this person was able to put up this week was remarkable and you won’t see numbers like this too often. Tyler Znoj managed to rack up 5 tackles which were all sacks. I almost went with a player who had 4, but 5 is better unless I’ve been doing math wrong my whole life.

Division 4

Offense

I know some people hate to pick players from games that are blowouts, but to me stats are stats and when they are off the chart you can’t deny giving the player some credit. Jacob Morin you balled out going 25 of 30 for 242 yards, 7 TDs, 4 1point converts and you also ran the ball 3 times for 8 yards.

Defense

I had a lot of different players to pick from this week and I went with a player that not many people know about. Samer Assi plays for Cereal Killers as their QB and this week he is here representing them for his defensive prowess. Samer made 4 tackles and had 2 picks this week.

Division 5

Offense

In the lower division you have a bunch of family members playing with one another and everyone might recognize the last name but not his first name. Mathieu Lucas Alzate is making a statement and stepping out from underneath his brother Seb to make a name for himself in the league. Mathieu made 4 catches for 47 yards and 3 TDs. Oh and I almost forgot Mathieu threw 1 pass that was for 9 yards and a TD.

Defense

This is the first time that I will be giving the award to two players. These two players have split reps all season as rusher and without the other one giving them a break and a chance to catch their breath they wouldn’t have been able to do what they did this week. Katherine Blondin and Gabrielle Chaput together had 8 tackles, 5 sacks and 1 safety. Not only did they put up numbers, but they managed to get good pressure all day long.

There you have it, my picks for player of the week. With only one week remaining and then playoffs some players only have one last chance and others have a few more. If you want to make my list, ball out and show me that I need to have you on my list.

Predictions and Power Rankings Week 9

Predictions and Power Rankings Week 9

Predictions

With only 2 weeks left in the regular season, I am all but out of the running for the crown. I guess I’ll have to just try to get above Jon so I don’t finish on the bottom. That or I start cheating and paying teams off. I’m just going to get to my picks which like always will be in bold after I show you the standings after last week.

Division 1

Moretti Crime Family vs Bitter Boys

There is no chance Crime Family loses this game they are by far the superior team.

Outlaws vs Bitter Boys

Outlaws will be missing a few players, but that won’t stop them from beating a tired Bitter Boys team.

Holy Trollers vs Centurions

With nothing left to play for Trollers come out and give it their all, but lose the game anyways since they aren’t as talented.

Division 2

KOLB vs Lean Mean Machines

They are more organized, better athletes and will be able to do whatever they want in this game.

Honor Game vs Petits Phoques

This was hard, but I have to go with Petits Phoques in this one after playing both teams I give them the slight edge.

Outlaws vs OG Panthers NA

I don’t pick my teams games.

RedZone vs Longs Chefs

I think with Mike being there and playing QB they win this game.

D#Nasty vs Joey’s Haters

D#Nasty needs the game more, but after the beating Haters took last week they rebound and win easily.

Division 3

Old School vs Nice TDs

I think it can be close but I don’t see how Dahic can do enough on offense to win this game with both Kris and Andrew playing defense.

Big Boys vs Washington Foreskins

Washington Foreskins do enough to get their last win of the season which should be enough to get them into the playoffs.

Black Knight vs Iron Wolves

I wanted to go Iron Wolves with this pick, but figured that Wolves have nothing left to play for and Black Knights want to prove that they are a title contender.

Deep Threats vs Mustard Tigers

I don’t think Svetna will be there and that way Mustard Tigers have been winning they have enjoyed that feeling and don’t want it to end so the play their asses off and win the game.

Average Joes vs Les Tannantes

I wanted to go with Tannantes, but they have had players missing every week and Average Joes need to win this if they want any hope for the playoffs because this game would give them the tiebreaker over Les Tannantes with this win.

Division 4

Airborne vs Panaches

There is no doubt in my mind that Panaches doesn’t win this game easily (ed’s note: I have read that sentence multiple times and I still have no idea what it means), they are the better team from top to bottom.

Les Improbables vs RawSauce

The Sauce will be too much for Improbables to handle.

Cereal Killers vs Sneaky Snakes

Last week the Snakes had an all-time best performance from David at QB, but don’t expect it again this week. Killers are coming to cut the head off this Snake.

Titans vs Thunder Buddies

With Terry not being there this week to rush and Ben being the other teams QB, it’s going to be a really long day for Thunder Buddies.

Sneaky Snakes vs Wolf Pack

With Jason and Marvin both looking like they will be there this week I don’t see how Wolf Pack doesn’t pull this off. (ed’s note: neither will be playing!)

Flamboyant Flamingos vs Les Bouchers

Flamingos are the best team in the division and losing to a team that isn’t close to them would really be shocking.

Division 5

Los Pollitos vs Mimosa Crew

Mimosa should be able to pull this one off, but it will be tough and you never know who will show up for them this week.

Les Last Calls vs Los Pollitos

They are by far the better team here and with Seb being back from injury they will be hard to stop.

Gold Rush vs Phoenix NA

I don’t pick my teams games.

Those are my picks for this week I know not everyone has been following the rules where if I pick you to win then you’re supposed to win and make me look good. Instead you have all been taking bribes from Jon, Terry, and most definitely Will, but I’m ok with that since I know I didn’t have to cheat to get my wins. I just wonder how much they have paid out in total to get where they are right now? Anyone want to give me a ball park figure as to how much a win cost in this league?

Power Rankings

I’ll give my rankings first then a short explanation as to why I made those moves.

Division 1

#1- Outlaws

#2- Ninja Turtles

#3- Henchmen

Division 2

#1- Petits Phoques (with Dom)

#2- Honor Game

#3- Outlaws

Division 3

#1- Iron Wolves

#2- Deep Threats

#3- Nice TDs

Division 4

#1- Flamboyant Flamingos

#2- Les Panaches

#3- RawSauce

Division 5

#1- Phoenix

#2- Spin Doctors

#3- Gold Rush

D1: After watching the Outlaws vs Ninja Turtles game those are by far the best two teams in the division. The third spot I gave to Henchmen, but only because they beat Moretti Crime Family this week, but sitting at 5-5 it’s not a lock they finish the season at 3. (ed’s note: it’s probably more likely that they miss the playoffs entirely, if anything!)

D2: I flipped Honor Game and Outlaws at two and three after playing and losing to Honor Games I couldn’t leave it how it was. This week will play a huge role as to where teams finish the season.  With big games between Petits Phoques and Honor Game and then Outlaws and OG Panthers. After this week we will see who the top teams in the division really are.

D3: Top two stay the same and at three I was going to put Black Knights, but their last win did nothing for me since it was a given and this week we will how good they are. As for Nice TDs making the list they have played well the last few games and have a win over Black Knights a few weeks back plus early losses in the season before they figured it all out.

D4: The same three teams are in my top three just in a different order. With Flamingos finally beating a good solid team I had to put them back at one, that would make Panaches two and RawSauce at three and I don’t think anyone can argue these teams as being the best in the division.

D5: After the way last week was I wasn’t sure of who to put in my top three. Then I started crunching the numbers and it slowly came to me. Phoenix did get walked all over on in a game that could have been overturned because of an illegal sub (ed’s note: let it go!), but we decided not to take it. Gold Rush lost this week to Phoenix in a game that was supposed to be for number one in the division, but they only had two players and from the way Spin Doctors have played the last few weeks had to go up, but they couldn’t take that number one spot after they got whooped by Phoenix a few weeks ago.

I know that my top three might not be perfect, but that is how it will be for at least another week and the only thing you and your team can do is go out and win your game and hope for the best.

Final Thoughts

I can’t wait to for the playoffs to start and we are almost there. After last fall being cut short and no winter season, we will finally get to crown a few new champions and possibly a few repeat teams as well. I have nothing else to say other than a reminder to pick up your trash after you are done and if you are bringing beer make sure it’s in a can; bottles break and kids play on the field and we don’t want to have them get hurt because of us. Ok, now for my weekly reminder that we are all playing a game for fun, so be safe and enjoy yourself.

Word from the Mouth: Clean Up Your Trash, Ya Filthy Animals! edition

Word from the Mouth: Clean Up Your Trash, Ya Filthy Animals! edition

Here we are two weeks remaining in the season and then playoffs. Everyone, or at least the captains, need to know that for subs the rules have changed. In order to be allowed a sub you need to be fewer than 6 players 7 if your QB doesn’t play defense and all subs need to be approved by the league. I know sometimes you don’t know what is happening and aren’t sure of the rules, but if you aren’t sure you should reach out to Jon a day or two before just to make sure. You don’t want to forfeit a game because of a rule mix up.

Now that we are into August, I hope you all know what that means? The NFL is back (well, kind of) and it’s preseason and to me it just means a few more weeks until we have meaningful games again and I can’t wait.

One last thing before I get to my recaps, I know it’s getting nice out and everyone would rather be at the field than at home, but please pick up your empty bottles when you leave. Nick went around this week and picked up two garbage bags full of trash and that isn’t cool. The city already wants to take the field from us and if we leave it full of garbage it wouldn’t be hard for them to do that, so clean up you trash.

Recap

Division 1

Outlaws vs Ninja Turtles (32-31)

I figured with all the players Outlaws were missing that it was an easy win for Ninja Turtles. Boy, was I ever wrong. Steve was missing a bunch of his weapons and when the game started Outlaws looked lost and dropped a few easy balls and you could see the steam coming from Steve’s ears. This week Tam was at QB and Wade was at wide and the switch looked to pay off. Wade made a few big catches on third down to extend drives. Tam made the hard throws when needed and was able to avoid the rush all day long. Outlaws need to have Terry there so Tam didn’t have all day to find open receivers. This game came down to the very end and with a bobbled ball that was eventually caught on fourth down out of the end zone because a defender made a play on the ball. These two teams will meet again the last week of the season and I expect it to be another close game.

Moretti Crime Family vs Henchmen (14-38)

This was a game that Henchmen needed to win to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. It was great to see Henchmen win, but let’s not overlook that Crime Family was missing Joey at QB. Gabe filled in and didn’t look like he was comfortable throwing on the smaller field than he is used to. I looked over the stats and no one stood out other than Demario with his 3 picks. All Henchmen did was get a few big plays and have short fields to work with while Crime Family looked pedestrian on offense without their QB. Henchmen were able to keep it together this week as a team and not as individuals and got the job done. I know that it will come down to tie breakers for the last spot in the playoffs (ed’s note: I mean, it could, but even that is an outside chance!), but to me I really think both teams are dangerous and I wouldn’t want to see either one of them in the playoffs as at any point they can light you up for points at will.

Division 2

Outlaws vs Honor Game (45-53)

This was supposed to be a possible championship preview and it didn’t disappoint. I want to say that Honor Game completely outplayed Outlaws and that if it wasn’t for Steve leading the offense it would have been even worse. Outlaws weren’t able to do anything on defense and Honor Games went up and down the field at will and made it look like they were playing people who never played before. I would like to point out that Outlaws lost a player due to injury early in the game which left them at 7 players. With 8 minutes or so left in the game, Outlaws get the ball and the plan was to waste all the time before scoring. I felt that since we couldn’t get a stop on defense that we should try to score quickly and then try to get a stop on defense and if we couldn’t stop them we could allow them to score and then finish the game on offense. Outlaws score and left 3 minutes and that was too much time for Dave. Honor Game went down scored and left 1 play for Outlaws which Laurence picked off and returned for a TD. Honor Games won by 8 points, but really it was only 2 and Outlaws ended up missing 3 key players on their defense, both safeties and their rusher. When these two teams meet in the playoffs expect to see two totally different rosters show up.

Honor Game vs OG Panthers (18-41)

This was not a good game if you are on Honor Game or a fan of theirs. OG were missing Terry and Charles and to fill in for Charles they had Simon and let me tell you he looked good. Even before the game you knew that Dave and his team’s heads weren’t in it. They used everything they had to beat Outlaws, Marvin got into it with Dave and decided to leave the team. Then the game started and OG took the opening drive in for six then got the 2 point convert. Then on their first play on defense a safety. Even with the really slow start from Honor Game they were up 18-17 at half. Then the second half started and it all started to unwind for Honor Game. They couldn’t move the ball or get a stop on defense, they started to look at the refs for every little thing that didn’t go their way. The difference in this game was adjustments made at half time and the fact that Honor Game was completely gassed by this point and weren’t making smart decisions. I’ll take Honor Game 9 out of 10 times, but this just happened to be that 1 time.

Division 3

Mustard Tigers vs Les Tannantes (32-28)

Again this week Owie comes in and plays the hero for Mustard Tigers. I thought Brian would be back this week when I made my picks, but I guess Brian saw my reasoning why I didn’t pick them and decided he’ll take another week off just to cost me the crown. Again this week Les Tannantes were without their QB and you can see the team has really struggled once everyone started missing games. I hope that once the playoffs are here they have their entire roster. The thing that I find funny is how Dave and John do all the work getting yards and catches and somehow Tom gets all the glory with 3 TDs. My bet would be that teams started to focus on them and allowed Owie to hit Tom over the middle while he was wide open or Owie be the smart QB that he is just threw it up where only Tom could get it so at least 8 feet in the air.

Iron Wolves vs Chiefs (26-12)

Once it was known that Deep Threats were forfeiting their game, Iron Wolves had secured the number 1 spot and a first round bye, but that didn’t stop them from going out and getting the win to keep the perfect season alive. Look at that, Ian finally made it out to a game after taking months to move. Going into the season I had very low expectations for Iron Wolves, but now if they don’t win it all I feel the season will be a bust and a waste of time for them. Every week Mauricio is doing more and more to get on the stat sheet, this might be his best overall season ever.

Division 4

Les Pananches vs Flamboyant Flamingos (25-26)

All season people in the media have all thought the same thing, Flamingos haven’t played anyone good this season. Finally we get to see them play a top team and this game didn’t disappoint. This game had it all. Both teams played solid defense forcing the offense to be smart with the ball and take what is given to them. I kept getting score updates on this game and it was back and forth all game. With 2 minutes left in the game Panaches was up and it seemed like they were going to keep it that way, but on fourth and ten Dimitri threw up what looked like a prayer and the ball fell incomplete and it looked like it was over until you look around and see the flag on the ground. Martin was called for Pass Interference giving Flamingos another go at it. It only took Dimitri two plays to punch it in and go up by 1 point with 10 seconds left. Felix couldn’t get it done first play was a check down for a few yards, second was incomplete and on the last play of the game the ball got picked off. That is it, we are left with 1 undefeated team left in the division.

Cereal Killers vs Titans (26-37)

I’m a little bit surprised it was this close in the end. I figured that Titans would have their way in this game. I, like many people in the division, might be going to speak to Lucas about what he did to stop Ben. Okay, maybe not stop Ben, but at least slow him down as he managed to get 3 sacks this week on him. For weeks now I have been saying that Cereal Killers are very athletic and they just proved it again this week, now all they need is some more experience. Austin was the big target this week for Titans, but every week someone else making plays for them as Ben does a good job of spreading the ball around really well. Titans have the best offense in the division and have only been stopped a few times all season. For Cereal Killers to do it twice in one game seems like a victory to me. Cereal Killers should make the playoffs with 1 win in their last 2 games. Both games are winnable for them, it will just be a matter of who wants it more.

Division 5

Les Last Calls vs Phoenix (39-6)

Before the game I had heard talk about how good the sub was for Les Last Calls, but I really didn’t think anything of it, then the game started and well the rest is history. I will say that everyone thinks I’m a bit of a dick, but not all the time. I could have had this game voided because of the sub rules and I didn’t. Les Last Calls deserved to win this game they out played us right from the start. Seb had a pick 6 on the opening drive and then Phoenix was forced to punt. Les Last Calls took a shot deep and got behind the defense for an easy 45 yard score. By half time it was 33-0 Les Last Calls and the game was over except for the time. I can tell you from being there and seeing the game that the defense on Phoenix didn’t show up to play and the offense couldn’t get any big plays to try and bring the game back to respectability. Again, being on Phoenix and seeing how we came out flat and relaxed to play right from the start it didn’t take long to see that the intensity wasn’t there. Les Last Calls needed this game to keep their playoff hopes alive and it was a well-earned win.

Phoenix vs Gold Rush (19-12)

This was supposed to be the game for first place. Then during the week Jon messages me and tells me Gold Rush has 2 players and by the rules I can take the forfeit and not have to play the game. I thought about it for a few minutes then decided that this would be a good game to try a few new things and get a few of the players some experience that they need. Gold Rush ended up getting 4 players from Titans in division 4 so it was no longer going to be an easy game for us. Phoenix got up 12-0 and tried to coast to the win and just like the game before, Phoenix made a few mistakes (Vince slipping) on defense and allowed Gold Rush back into the game. With the score 12 all, Gold Rush was driving for the game winning score and Julian came up with 1 of his 3 picks of the game to give Phoenix one last chance to avoid OT. Phoenix was able to waste all but 9 second of the clock before scoring. The convert was a huge play and would give us the extra cushion should Gold Rush score. I take the snap, looked one way, and then throw it up to the back of the end zone where Julian comes down with it and manages to keep his toes inbounds. Gold Rush doesn’t score and just like that the game is over. This was a good game, but I would have rather beaten the real Gold Rush team to take control of the division.

There you have it my recap of week 10.

Top Performances of the week

At this point you know you’re a star or just a role player, but that doesn’t mean you’re not good enough to make my list. All I’m looking for is someone who balled out and helped their team win the game and in very rare cases a player who lost, but had some ridiculous stat line. I’m not Jon, I pick players from teams that dominated, but it would depend on the circumstances. This week I had one or two hard picks to make but the rest were pretty easy. Now let’s see who made my list.

Division 1

This is one of those weeks where I had no choice but to give out my award to only 1 player since he dominated on both sides of the ball. Demario Cooper played 2 games this week and was a stud in both of those games while playing multiple positions. Demario had 3 catches for 41 yards 2 TDs and a 1point convert as a receiver. He also went 24 of 28 for 301 yards passing with 7 TDs and 7 1point converts. Oh I also forgot to mention he made 12 tackles and 3 picks on defense. Now those are some real stud numbers.

Division 2

Offense

I have never given the award to a player subbing before, but this week is a first. Simon Duchesne filled in at QB for OG and absolutely balled out in this huge upset. Simon went 24 of 37 for 260 yards with 5 TDs, 1 1point convert and 1 2point convert as well. Simon has struggled before at QB in the MFL but not this week.

Defense

I spoke to a few players from the team that this player plays on and was told there was absolutely no defense what so ever, that might have been true, but Alexandre Vallieres made a huge impact and a big difference in the game. Alexandre finished the game with 3 tackles which were all sacks. It wasn’t necessarily the sacks that were huge it was the pressure he had all game long.

Division 3

For this pick I had a few players all on the same team to pick from, but I went with a person that I have played with before just because I feel without him they don’t win this week. I went with Thomas Znoj over his teammates. His 6 catches for 38 yards might not seem like a lot but his 3 TDs more than make up for it.

Defense

If I remember correctly I had picked this person week 1 in his very first game in the league and now 8 weeks later he made it back up here again. Jonathan Lavoie went off this week with 4 tackles which were his 4 sacks. In a relatively tight game he made all the difference on defense for Iron Wolves.

Division 4

Offense

I went with a player who has struggled this season, but this week he stepped up and showed what he can really do. David Brisson went 19 of 32 for 215 yards, 6 TDs and 2 1point converts. He also ran the ball 5 times for 29 yards. This was the type of performance that Sneaky Snakes wanted to see all season.

Defense

I went ahead and gave my pick to a player that did everything he could to help keep his teams slim playoff hopes alive. Thibault Varin went out and made 10 tackles, got an interception, and returned it for a TD. Yes, his team might have won in a blowout, but how would it have been had he not been there?

Division 5

Offense

Again, like in D2, I’m giving the award to another sub. Felix Senecal came out and subbed for Les Last Calls and made huge impacts in both games. Felix in his two games had 11 catches for 247 yards and 6 TDs. He single handedly beat my team.

Defense

I had a tough time making this pick and I ended up picking a player that was one and one on the day. Julian Sablowski made huge plays in the second game and without his third pick of the game Phoenix would have lost that game. Julian had 1 tackle and 3 picks this weekend.

You might or might not agree with my pick, but they are my picks and if you don’t like it, then ball out and make my list. You only have two weeks left if you want to make it up here, so ball out and prove to me you are worthy of being my player of the week.

Predictions and Power Rankings Week 8

Predictions and Power Rankings Week 8

Predictions

With only 3 weeks left in the season the chance to come out on top of the media team is slowly slipping away. I might not finish first, but beating Jon is still possible and the real goal was to not allow Jon to win. With so few games left and not picking our own games, maybe I should start to throw my team games just to get back in the hunt. Once playoffs roll around, we will still be doing our picks, but there will be point spreads that we will have to deal with.

Here are the standings from last week along with the overalls then I’ll put my picks and like always my picks are in bold.

Division 1

Bitter Boys vs Holy Trollers

Redemption for the week 5 upset.

Outlaws vs Ninja Turtles

Ninja Turtles win because of inside info I have pertaining to vacations.

Moretti Crime Family vs Henchmen

Too many me’s and not enough team for Henchmen, plus Moretti have a way better roster.

Holy Trollers vs Henchmen

They get the win to finish the season on a high, but not enough to get a playoff spot.

Division 2

Petits Phoques vs D#Nasty

I just can’t see how D#Nasty can pull this off after their last few games.

Honor Game vs Outlaws NA

I don’t pick my teams games.

OG Panthers vs Honor Game

Honor Game will walk all over OG in this one, watch and see.

Lean Mean Machines vs RedZone

RedZone are by far the superior team and shouldn’t have a hard time in this game.

Joey’s Haters vs KOLB

I was going to take KOLB and then I remembered that its vacation time and players will be missing.

Division 3

Old School vs Big Boys

Old School will win, but it won’t be pretty.

Nice TDs vs Average Joes

Average Joes will win if they can stop Andrew, and Kris will then do the rest to ruin any chance Nice TDs have to win.

Iron Wolves vs Chiefs

With both of my players of the week for last week, how can they lose this game?

Mustard Tigers vs Les Tannantes

This week I don’t think Owie will be throwing for Mustard Tigers so I don’t see them having a chance.

Deep Threats vs Black Knights

I know that Black Knights don’t want to see this and they feel they have multiple people who can do it, but they aren’t stopping Svetna 1 on 1 and I want to see them try.

Division 4

Wolf Pack vs RawSauce

Jason will have his hands full with Antoine and won’t have time to find his open receivers.

Les Beautes vs Les Bouchers

I want to push this game, but since I have to pick, I’ll give Les Beautes their final win of the season in this game.

Sneaky Snakes vs Les Improbables

They are younger and faster and that will be more than enough to pull off the win.

AirBorne vs Wolf Pack

When you have the D4 player of the century on your roster how can you lose this game?

Les Panaches vs Flamboyant Flamingos

One of these teams will suffer their first loss of the season and from the teams they have played so far I can’t see Panaches not pulling it off.

Cereal Killers vs Titans

No one has stopped Titans from scoring at will all season and that won’t stop this week.

Division 5

Los Pollitos vs Les Last Calls

I can’t see how playing man defense, Los Pollitos will be able to stop or even slow down Seb from Les Last Calls.

Phoenix vs Les Last Calls NA

I don’t pick my teams games.

Spin Doctors vs Mimosa Crew

They have the better roster and loads more experience.

Phoenix vs Gold Rush NA

I don’t pick my teams games.

There you have it my picks for the week. Good luck to everyone this weekend but if I didn’t pick your team don’t try too hard.

Power Rankings

I’ll give my rankings first then a short explanation as to why I made those moves.

Division 1

#1- Outlaws

#2- Ninja Turtles

#3- Moretti Crime Family

Division 2

#1- Petits Phoques (with Dom)

#2- Outlaws

#3- Honor Game

Division 3

#1- Iron Wolves

#2- Deep Threats

#3- Average Joes

Division 4

#1- Les Panaches

#2- RawSauce

#3- Flamboyant Flamingos

Division 5

#1- Phoenix

#2- Gold Rush

#3- Spin Doctors

In division 1 I was thinking about flipping spots 2 and 3, but then looking over all the stats I felt that they are where they belong at least right now.

For division 2 all the teams in my top 3 dominated so mixing it up would be a waste of time. I can tell you that there will be changes following this week.

Division 3 spots 1 and 2 are secure, but I had to kick Les Tannantes out since it’s a different bunch of guys every week. I know that I will hear from Kris on Saturday about how they aren’t in my top 3, but really Nice TDs are all about Kris and Andrew and all it takes is something small for it to blow up on them.

Division 4 is staying the same after last week, but with 1 and 3 playing each other next week it can look completely different.

Division 5 with Les Last Calls losing last week and if you saw how Spin Doctors played last week you would make this move as well.

There you have it my rankings following week 9. You still have a few weeks to make my list, but at this point of the season you should be focused on trying to make the playoffs and not worry about my rankings.

Final Thoughts

I don’t have much to say as I said it all up above. I’m on vacation and I don’t have my laptop charger with me and I’m down to under 5% battery life so I want to finish this off before it dies and I have to do it tomorrow which would mean I’d have to head to work and who wants that on vacation? So, go out, have fun, play hard, and be safe. See you all Saturday.

Word from the Mouth: Going for Gold! edition

Word from the Mouth: Going for Gold! edition

Finally, after a year delay the Olympics are back (ed’s note: it’s so great to, as a nation, just be throwing away money on useless stuff again!). I used to be a huge fan of them growing up, but now I have grown up and learned that they are all crap. The Olympics used to mean something (ed’s note: false), it was for amateur athletes to showcase their talents in front of the world. Professional athletes making millions a year are ruining it for the rest of the competitors. I know you want to see the best of the best, but get the pros out. This year they aren’t allowed to have fans due to Covid (ed’s note: truly, dark times). I just can’t understand having them when the host country is still having large outbreaks in some of the cities where the events are being held.

I used to enjoy the swimming and track events, but now I have moved on and all I want to see are real sports like 7s in rugby and water polo where players are getting hit. Both games are fast paced and very enjoyable to watch if you know the game.

This year they have added street skateboarding and if I’m correct next Olympics or world Championship they will be adding Flag Football. You might not have been able to make it to the NFL or even CFL, but you might be able to represent your country playing the game we all love. I’m sure that you all know that it’s one big orgy at the games and that tens of thousands of condoms have been given to the athletes so that they can stay safe, but have you seen those cardboard beds they are expected to sleep on (ed’s note: where are you going with this?!?). I’m just wondering are we going to have more athletes pull up with muscles being torn or more athletes getting hurt with their beds collapsing.

Week 9 recap

Division 1

Centurions vs Bitter Boys (19-0)

This had to be one of the worst Division 1 games in a long time. Both QBs were missing wide open players and then when they did manage to get the balls to their players, more often than not the receiver dropped it. With the win, Centurions are almost guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. Mario and Bitter Boys know they have nothing to play for, but to have fun. I know everyone thinks Bitter Boys are rough, but in most games that I’ve seen them play they have been fine. Bitter Boys are guys that have either played tackle or at least coached it and a little contact from them and the other team starts to freak out. I get it we play flag and we have no contact, but stop flopping, this isn’t soccer. On Samuel’s first score it was a short little drag left when he caught it and he turned straight up along the sideline and scored. He thought he was flagged and I had to let him know if he was going jog it in from midfield and not full sprint, then I’d have to flag him for showboating next time he got the ball. This was hard to watch as not a lot was happening other than the drops and bad passes. Moving forward, Centurions will have to play better than this if they want to win. I think since Mario and JS hung around drinking after their game this week that next week they should take a shot for every dropped pass and missed tackle and see how long it takes for one of them to hit the floor first.

Ninja Turtles vs Moretti Crime Family (37-48)

This was a game that everyone on the panel saw Ninja Turtles winning. I wish that I had seen this game as it was all offense. There were almost 500 yards passing to go along with 13 TDs. You would think that with both teams being so loaded with talent that the offense would have been slowed down, but since flag is all about putting up points, that’s what we got here. I don’t understand how no one has figured out how to stop Joey and his flood offense. You would have figured that one of the Pilon brothers would have shut it down. The player that shined the most to me in this game has to be Wade. From where he started the season to now you can see that he is taking what the defense gives him and doesn’t seem to force the bad throws that he used to. The teams have split the previous 2 games, so expect to see the deciding game in the playoffs.

Division 2

Longs Chefs vs OG Panthers (32-39)

OG are on a three game win streak after this win, but this one almost didn’t happen. OG jumped out to a huge lead by half and then tried to coast the rest of the way. Longs Chefs are a better team than everyone expects and since they made the change to Max at QB the team has been able to score and move the ball. Longs Chefs can still make the playoffs, but it would take winning out and some luck. Realistically it’s time for them to play spoiler and ruins someone else’s chance of getting in. A few weeks ago no one expected OG to be where they are right now and with the hardest part of the schedule coming up, it won’t take much for them to get into the playoffs, but if they want to be one of the favorites now is where they will have to show what they are made of.

RedZone vs Joey’s Haters (27-39)

RedZone were missing a few players, but got more than adequate subs in Carmine and Andrew. I know both of these guys and both are ballers. The only thing that was hard for them was the field size being smaller then what they are use to. Haters have been playing decent all year, but the last few weeks Max has begun to look like his old self making the rusher miss, scrambling and even running when it’s open. Haters are all but in the playoffs, unless they completely fall apart the last few games. This was a tough weekend for RedZone with the two losses and they almost need to win out and I can’t see that happening. Going 2-1 over there last 3 might get them in, but they would need help in that case.

Division 3

Nice TDs vs Deep Threats (13-25)

I was there for this one and all I can remember is Kris not being in a good mood, Andrew keeping his mouth shut as well as limping around, and that Deep Threats were just too strong for Nice TDs, especially when they were dropping very catchable balls. The big thing that stands out is the argument between Kris and Brian. Kris wants everyone to be perfect, but that’s impossible. Yes, sometimes Kris is right to yell at his team, but most of the time he is wrong and this time he was right and wrong at the same time. He yelled at Brian for not catching a ball that was tipped and the ball changed where it was going. Brian could have still caught the ball, but Kris needs to calm the Picasso down and just play the game. Kris yelled and Brian stood his ground and yelled back and then took his stuff and walked off, he did return a few minutes later. These are the things you have to deal with when Kris is on your team when you are losing (ed’s note: and sometimes when you’re winning).

Les Tannantes vs Black Knights (31-39)

I missed this game, but was able to talk with a few players from both teams after the game. I had to find out what is going on with Les Tannantes and I got the response that would explain a lot. They have been missing players all season and have only played two games with their full roster. From Black Knights perspective, they are the better team and can beat everyone out there. Those are big words coming from Richie Rich and the unathletic bunch. No really, Black Knights have a bunch of solid players and should be able to keep up with most teams. I would have liked to have seen an extra minute or two of added time in this game like soccer to see if Les Tannantes could have punched it in and tied up the game. We don’t play soccer, so no added time. Black Knights will have their hands full the rest of the season as will Les Tannantes. If there is a rematch it would be in the playoffs in the second or third round and I just don’t see that happening.

Division 4

AirBorne vs RawSauce (0-55)

What am I to say about this game? AirBorne were missing half their roster and were without their QB. This game got ugly fast and you have to feel bad for AirBorne. RawSauce did what they do and play a stifling defense and this week they figured out how to score. Last week I predicted RawSAuce to win I also figured that Antoine would get at least 5 sacks. He managed to get 3 plus he forced Simon who was acting like a QB to throw 4 picks and 2 more from Isaac. I hate blow outs and to me teams need to stop running up the score. Playoff tiebreaker is points against not for (ed’s note: this was shutout…).

Titans vs Les Bouchers (64-38)

102 points scored in this game and let me tell you it could have been more. The game wasn’t as close as the score makes it seem. I know it’s a 26 point difference, but at no point were Titans not in charge in this one. The play that stands out to me was last play of the half. Ben sends everyone deep from his 5 yard line, waits a little avoids the rush, starts to go left then decides he’ll go right, he then takes off running up the side line, cuts in runs all the way to the other side line, makes 3 guys miss, turns it up, makes another player miss, and has a 45 yard run on the last play of the half and wasn’t even breathing hard when he got back into the huddle. The league needs to add rules in that says that QBs that are under 5’6” are not allowed to run. You have Ben and Dom who both are unstoppable runners when they want to be.

Division 5

Gold Rush vs Les Last Calls (25-12)

Once again this was the Travis show. Travis Ran 1 in, threw 2, and returned a pick this week. Travis had to get in his stats now since this was his last game of the season. Who takes a vacation to Greece with their girlfriend during the season? I guess Travis does. I was hoping for a better performance from Les Last Calls in this game, but without Seb, their best player, it makes it tough to try and contain a dual threat QB like Travis. Les Last Calls will need a few wins and things to fall in their favor if they want to reach the post season. Gold Rush I think are locked in and it’s just a matter of where they will finish.

Spin Doctors vs Los Pollitos (52-26)

Another week without their QB and Samuel had to fill in again. Samuel is the best player on Los Pollitos and needs to be used as a weapon not a QB (ed’s note: QBs aren’t weapons?). For the first half of the game it was relatively close, then spin Doctors with all that experience started to pick apart the man defense and it was over after that. I think Spin Doctors are a good solid team, but near the end of the game what they were doing was really not cool. You know that Los Pollitos are very new and have little experience, so play straight up don’t run trick plays on converts or throw deep passes knowing that they can’t keep up. I hope this comes backs and bites you in the ass down the road. Raph you’re the team captain and the leader of the team, step up and stop this from happening.

That is it for my recap this week. I hope you enjoyed and teams please stop running up the score against your weaker opponents. Everyone is here to have fun and if winning and putting up tons of points is fun for you then don’t get upset when you end up in a division where you are the weak team and it happens to you.

Top Performances of the week

To get here you had to ball out and prove you earned your spot into the No Marvin Club. This week we had lots of good games along with a few blowouts. I hate to pick players from games that are lopsided, but sometimes I have no choice.

There has been some debate as to who the really player of the weeks are. I know Jon puts his picks up on the website and a lot of people seem to think that those players haven’t really earned it. I will tell you that when I make my picks I look at all the stats from all the games and sometimes it’s really close that I have to go in and look at the play by play to see when those players made the plays they did. For example player A has 3 picks and player B has 4 sacks both players could easily get my pick. I look and see that player A had 2 of his picks on last plays of the half and game and his team won by 9 points. To me those picks at the end of half are just toss ups and don’t really have an effect on the outcome. Player B makes his sacks on big third down plays and forces the other team to punt or go for it on fourth. I’d have to go with the rusher in this case. Same thing with the offense.

Now that I explained how I make my picks here they are.

Division 1

Offense

I really hate to do this, but this player is a real big asshole and had to ruin my streak of not putting him up here even after weeks of balling out. I think I have to put more blame on the rest of the division for not playing better, but this week I have to say Marvin Steinberg or as he is better known around the league as D4 Player of the Century (ed’s note: now D4 Player of the Epoch!) did enough to finally get my vote as player of the week with his 8 catches for 142 yards, 4 TDs and a 1point convert.

Defense

This player is also on the Outlaws, but is a much nicer guy then Marvin. Julien Proulx had to step up and take charge of the defense with Smuda not being there and he did that. Proulx had 2 tackles, 2 picks and took 1 back to the house for 6 points.

Division 2

Offense

Louis-Mathieu Dufour does it again folks. After tearing it up last week he did even better this time around. 6 grabs for only 82 yards and 4 TDs. The yards went down this week, but the TDs went up.

Defense

I really had a hard time picking this week’s winners. I had a few guys with very similar stats as well as a player that really stood out, but wasn’t eligible to win. Once I narrowed it down I came away with Kareem Anthony Chilcott. Kareem had 4 tackles, 2 picks and a pick 2. It all came down to the pick 2 that put him over the top.

Division 3

Offense

I came up with 3 players that really could have gotten it this week, but when all their stats were side by side it became an easy choice to make. This week Ignacio Valdes-Manzandes is the winner. Ignacio had 10 catches for 86 yards and 4 TDs.

Defense

I was so close to giving it to a different player then who I went with and I didn’t because that player didn’t need to be there to help his team win their game, I can’t say the same about my pick in Mauricio Toscano. Mauricio had 5 tackles, a sack, and a pick all in the same game. I’m not sure if you take Mauricio away this week if Iron Wolves don’t lose this game.

Division 4

Offense

I looked it all over and Thomas Gerin-Lajoie is my winner this week. Thomas had 6 catches for 73 yards and 3 TDs. Those are some solid numbers from a player whose brother is the QB and doesn’t want to share the love from the parents, so Felix limits the touches Thomas gets.

Defense

I stuck with the theme for this division and went with another player named Thomas, but this Thomas plays for Flamboyant Flamingos. Thomas Leclerc is my defensive pick this week. Thomas had 3 tackles to go along with his 2 picks.

Division 5

Two Way Player

With only 2 games being played instead of picking an offensive and defensive player I have elected to only pick 1 player who made an impact on both sides of the ball. The player that I sected was none other than Meliza Lafleur. She did it all this weeks. On offense Meliza had 4 catches for 79yards, 1 TD and a 1point convert. Meliza also made a play on defense as well, with an interception that she took back for 6 points.

That is it for my picks this week. You only have 3 weeks left to ball out and get my attention. I know that this is crunch time for some teams trying to secure a playoff spot, so that alone should push you to play better. At the beginning of the year I said let your play do all the talking for you and that is correct for my weekly awards. I also have a say in who gets the end of season awards, so for that you can send me a message and I’ll direct you to where you can send your bribes.
