Word from the Mouth: New Ed for the Week!

Word from the Mouth: New Ed for the Week!

After 2 weeks at Darcy McGee, we went back to Leber and did a number on the grass that was there. We should be incredibly lucky that it didn’t rain until the last slot of the day. Looks like we are back at Darcy McGee this week but for how much longer. Guess we have to see how much these soccer players are little cry babies and complained to city. Those mean people from weeks ago want to start something that they don’t know they can’t win. I can be as petty as the next person; I am a vegetarian for the last 6 years out of spite. I can be there at 7am to set up and then the field is ours since it would be first come first serve if they won’t take reservations on the field. Best part about Saturday and being at Leber was being able to send one of the field lovers to go over and get Pizza for me and I guess Nick as well, damn kids can’t do anything on their own.

Recap

Division 1

Iron Wolves vs Chiefs (49-18)

Both teams were without their starting QB, but Chiefs were missing their backup as well. This mean Elijah needed to step up and play lights out, throwing 5 picks won’t cut it. Chiefs had a bunch of drops, blown coverages on defense and just were out of it by half. Willie did a great job of spreading the ball and taking what was open by the defense.

Busch Boys vs A-Team (32-28)

I know nothing of this game, but I’ve been informed of a name change. It’s now Busch Men not Busch Boys (ed's note: didn't get any memo about this yet, but it also doesn't have the same ring to it).

Division 2

Missed this division this week (ed's note: make sure to tune in to MFL Total Access for full coverage of every game from D2!).

Division 3

Sooners vs Bines (22-6)

This was a shit game to watch. Both teams struggled to do anything with the ball. Diego missed on 3 or 4 fourth down attempts going long when he had players open short. Bines couldn’t get 2 first downs on a drive. The only thing that worked well in this game was Julien Bertrand getting 4 sacks and only allowing Diego to gain 22 yards with his legs. Total yards in this game for both teams was 136.

Phoenix vs Iron Wolves (39-19)

What can I say about this game that Jon was so scared of that he had to plan a trip over the pond to get away from me. Without Jon, Andrew subbed in, and did a decent job. Andrew was 15 of 30 for 104 yards, 3 TDs and 1 pick, plus he added 33 yards on the ground as well. Game started with Phoenix marching inside the redzone before the wind (ed's note: this sounds like an excuse...) took what looked like an easy TD into a pick by Conner who almost scored on it. This gave Iron Wolves great field position and an easy score. After a turnover on downs and Iron Wolves going up 13-0 Phoenix woke up and got things going. Phoenix then went on to score on their next 6 possession and built a big lead. Phoenix knew going in that they need to stop Kris if they wanted a chance to win and I guess holding Kris to 8 catches, 67 yards and a TD was enough since no one else stepped up. Alex was had put a nice game together scoring a TD before getting hurt and leaving the game. Hope you’re ok Alex.

RawSauce vs Horde (13-45)

RawSauce is a mess missing players left right and center, needing to rush players back from injuries just to field a team. Horde on the other hand are firing on all cylinders. Simon has a true number 1 target in St-Jean along with a 1b in Guillaume and the rest of the team isn’t bad as well.

Guillaume had 6 catches for 116 yards and 1 TD, but all those catches and yards don’t have bananas on the 1 handed pick he made. Simon was able to double dip by scoring to end the half and then started the second half with the ball and scoring again. Now the score was 26 nothing and at this point RawSauce was just trying to make a game of it by scoring. Their defense then gave up an easy score and it was back to a 26-point difference. At that point RawSauce had enough and were just out there to finish the game they knew was out of reach.

Division 4

Phoenix vs Improbables (19-6)

We played for colors, winner was going to get the rights to wear green no matter if they are home or away. This was a slow game with both QBs using every tick of the clock and the going short all game. All game form sideline you can hear put me in coach I can get it done and after getting down 19-0 coach decides he had enough from his sideline and threw the chirper out there to see what he could do. Well after the QB tried to fake a handoff to him and Jacob looked back and just takes the ball out of the QBs hands and decided to run. He went left then right, had time to stop take a break signa few autographs for his fans then proceed to run the rest of the way for a TD. Afterwards goes up to Matt now what was so hard about that, I told you give me the ball and get out of my way. Jacob for MVP. Gab had a big game for Phoenix scoring twice on her 3 catches. (ed's note: I'd like to add that Jacob is the youngest player in MFL history to score a touchdown!)

Mimosa Crew vs Ledgendaries (28-19)

Both QBs struggled to keep drives going as they only completed 13 passes each which is well below the 50% completions and they each threw 3 picks. Ilias had a pick 6 as the rusher which is what kept Mimosa Crew in the game since up to then nothing went their way. With a roster like Ledgenadires (ed's note: I wonder how good they'd be if their team name was Legendaries) you expect them to be unstoppable, well that isn’t the case. Ben scoring all 19 points and James had all 3 picks for them, who else stepped up and made plays. They will need that if they want to make waves in the playoffs. On the Mimosa side of the ball if it wasn’t for the pick 6 and a 36 yards TD run from Curren they were mediocre at best and got away with one. A lucky win is better than a pretty lose any day of the week (ed's note: actually, if you ask Willy, mama always says "an ugly win is better than a pretty loss").

Systèmes Urbains vs 100 Genies (18-39)

Gabriel Mercier might be the best player or at least QB in the division and here is why. It was pouring rain when this game was being played and he was throwing 40-yard bombs down field like it was bright and sunny day, then there are his legs where he runs with speed and power. Now if he can cut down on the bad picks, he is all set. It wasn’t a great offensive game for them this week with only Othmane gaining over 40 yards through the air. It was the defense that showed up getting 6 picks and scoring on 1 of them. Systèmes Urbains aren’t a great team, and we all know it (ed's note: ouch), but they do have a few good players and in time they will get better. This is the second time I’ve seen them play plus the time I played against them, and I can tell you they are improving every week (ed's note: nice save). JF had 2 TDs for Systèmes Urbains and Vincent had a sack while rushing and a pick which he returned while playing safety. This Vincent kid will be come a true gamechanger once he learns the ins & Outs of the game.

Division 5

I missed this division, hope to be back catching some action next week (ed's note: make sure to tune in to MFL Total Access for some coverage of some D5 games!).

Women’s

I missed this division, hope to be back catching some action next week (ed's note: make sure to tune in to MFL Total Access for full coverage of every game from the Women's Division!).

I spent a bunch of time in D4 this week and it was nice to see other teams play and get to talk about them. My goal is to talk about each team once and with us using multiple locations in the day sometimes it hard.

Studs & Duds

Just past the halfway point in the season and most player are getting into midseason form and putting up crazy good numbers, but we still have those few players that just show up strap up their cleats and thing its just going to be hand to them. Now let’s see who did what and if they made either of my list.

Studs

Division 1

- Marvin Steinberg pulled in 8 balls for 106 yards, 3 TDs, 1 1-point convert (ed's note: game winning OT convert). Then made 4 tackles and picked Willie once.

Division 2

- Joey Notaro 64 yards on 5 catches and 2 TDs including the winner that put them up 8.

Division 3

- Guillaume Renaud-Dumoulin 1 TD, over 100 yards receiving plus 2 picks on defense.

Division 4

- Antoine Bussieres 4 TDs on 6 catches and over 100 yards oh and a pick on defense.

Division 5

- Jonathan Beaudin 4 picks.

Women’s

- Anne-Marie Côté for coming in with under 9 minutes left down 7 and leading your team on 2 scoring drives and

getting a pick to help your team get their first win of the season.

Duds

Division 1

- That defense for the Chiefs looking like Swiss cheese out there with all those holes.

Division 2

- Kerano Johnson 3.67-yard average catch, you’re a big play guy and that just isn’t going to cut it (ed's note: two of his 6 catches were 1 yard touchdowns, really tough to gain more than 1 yard in those situations...).

Division 3

- Diego Castro Arellano the way mike talks about you 64 yards in the air and 22 yards on the ground just won’t cut it even if you get the W.

Division 4

- Michael Lesniak 6 picks.

Division 5

- Soonies Offense for having 3 different QBs and none getting over 30 yards and putting up no points.

Women’s

- Déesses du Drapeau for half your team not showing up to a big gamer like this.

There you have it my Studs and Duds for week 6. If you’re expecting to see your name in my article you better ball, out put up some considerable numbers and hope that you did more than the other guy. Or you can just come out and play like Dog water and make my list that way.

I know not everyone will be happy about the rankings, but these are my rankings. You might not like them because your team didn’t make my list or isn’t as high as you think they should be. You should worry more about what’s happening on the field and it will all work itself out. (ed’s note: so, don’t care about what you wrote?)

Final Thoughts

As you all know by now, we are playing all our games this week at Le Ber, but we won’t be back there until playoffs. I might even throw some seed down before we play this week so we can work it and it will have time to grow before we are back. Let me remind everyone that we play in the rain, so don’t think or message asking if the game is still getting played, the answer is yes.

I’m glad I play early and I have a ton of gear to give me and my team every advantage we can get.

That is it. I’m done for this week hope you all have a good rest of the week and see you Saturday. Oh, and remember we are playing a game and it is for fun, so enjoy it and don’t take it too seriously.

Word from the Mouth: Short and Sweet! edition

Word from the Mouth: Short and Sweet! edition

I won’t lie and try and sugarcoat it, this week’s article is going to be short, sweet, and straight to the point. I’m super late with it as I was traveling all day Monday and like to have it in by Tuesday at some point.

Some good news, well at least for me and only this week, we are back playing at Le Ber. I know you all might like playing on the grass, but it was just easier this week since we have only 4 games playing at once and 7 time slots instead of just 6, so it’s going to be a long smellypants day for some.

Recap

Division 1

I missed out on both these games. All I know is Marvin is back and balled the tiddlywinks out and helped his team win. In the other D1 game, Jon chickened out and let Willie take the loss at QB.

Division 2

Missed out on D2 this week.

Division 3

Phoenix vs Super Friends (13-6)

Don’t know who this guy is, but Olivier St Onge is solid at QB. He subbed this week for Super Friends and if it wasn’t for a bunch of big drops from his players, they might have won the game. Going into this game, Phoenix needed their defense to show up and did they ever. Tyler made it a long day for Olivier, and this led to picks by JF and Josh. With 2 plays left in the half JF jumped a route and looked like he scores on the pick except the ball slipped out of his hands on the 2-yard line. Last play of the half, I threw a bad ball that was dropped which would have been a TD. To start the second half Phoenix started with the ball and was driving, but once again I threw a pass where the ball got away from me and floated high and was picked off by Adam. Instead of double dipping, we walked away with no points. Super Friends had a chance late, but on third down Tyler was there quick and forced a bad ball and on the last play of the game Tyler sealed it with a sack.

Division 4

CIA Fusion vs 100 Genies (18-6)

Drops, drops and more drops. Yes, that’s right, if Genies had caught a few of those passes then drives would have continued and they might have scored more than 6 points. Gabriel Mercier might not be a QB, but he sure can throw it. Jason had a good game on offense not making a crucial error, but he really stepped up his game on defense getting 3 picks and should have been 1 more, but he dropped it.

Bouchers vs Systemes Urbains (44-7)

Lukas threw 7 TDs in the game and threw 2 picks and missed on some throws, but this will be the game that gets Bouchers moving in the right direction. For Systemes Urbains, there are  a few issues, but they have Vincent Martel & Guillaume Simard who can both become really good players and should get used a lot more.

MTL Cessnas vs 28-3 (12-8)

JS wasn’t there so Sanketh Chunduri stepped in and got the first win in team history for MTL Cessnas. Massimiliano was the only player to show up for 28-3. Massimiliano had 23 yards and a TD on offense, then made 2 picks on defense. Mario and Emile did what they should, but I can’t get over how Sanketh played. Multiple times he avoided the rusher, kept his eyes looking to throw, and made good reads, but not always a great pass. If you were watching this game, you saw Chrissy take over the game as a rusher. She was all over Nico all game getting 1 sack, at least 1 PD, and forced countless bad throws leading to 3 picks.

Phoenix vs Bandits (18-0)

At the field you either love me like sunshine or hate me like most players do and Bandits found out why. Time management and just being me. Zach Lemaire is a legit rusher and against a less experienced QB he would have had 6 or 7 sacks, but only managed 2 and was there all game long. Phoenix was able to end the first half with Gab scoring from 10 yards out and making a good catch in traffic. Then Phoenix opened the second half with Greg scoring from 12 yards. With Bandits getting the ball being down 12 with 15 minutes left, they needed to put some points up. After an incomplete pass, Nick called the offensive play and Brian made a play on the ball and took it in for 6 points and the icing on the cake.

Division 5

I didn’t catch any games in the division this week, sorry folks.

Women’s

Drama Queen vs Mockingjays (24-12)

Both teams struggled to keep drives going and it makes sense as there were 10 picks in this game. The difference in the game was football IQ and Roxanne has loads of it which led to her getting 3 picks on defense and scoring on 1 of them. Rita Struggled most of the game, but late with a few words from coach Alex, she was able to finish the game with back-to-back scoring drives of 45 and 20 yards. I was more impressed by Mockingjays losing than Drama Queens winning.

Studs & Duds

Did we ever have a lot of players show up and ball the sea monkeys out. Don’t worry we also had a bunch not show up at all, so making my picks were pretty easy.

Studs

Division 1

- Marvin for his 3 TDs, 100 plus yards and a pick on defense all coming off a supposed injury. (ed’s note: and hungover!)

Division 2

- Kerano Johnson 7 catches for 132 yards and 3 TDs.

Division 3

- Nick Egley 7 catches, 109 yards and 2 TDs.

Division 4

- Antoine Bussieres scored 3 TDs, 1 1-point convert, 1 2-point convert and a pick on defense.

Division 5

- Luca Manolache was back under center and did what he does going 13 of 20 for 93 yards, 3 TDs, 1 pick and getting 1 convert. Now let’s see about his legs 12 runs for 74 yards and 2 TDs.

Women

- Florence Léonard 1 TD and 1 pick.

Duds

Division 1

- Rob White being at the game and registering no stats on either side of the ball.

Division 2

- Steve for throwing 3 picks in a D2 game.

Division 3

- Villains defense for giving up 2 rushing TDs to Jon of all people.

Division 4

- Connor Martin threw 4 picks.

Division 5

- Sniffers for not showing up.

Women

- Marie Lewis for her start to the volleyball game she showed up to play. If you know you know.

Those are my week 5 winners and losers. Better luck to everyone who balled out last week and didn’t make my list, you might have to try a bit harder and hope for the best.

Final Thoughts

I know its early and things might change, but its looking like nice weather once again this week. Last weekend was a bit warmer than what it was calling for, but you never know. Other than the grass, the best thing about playing at Darcy McGee is not having to take a shower then wash the shower because of the dirt.

For everyone who is only there for 1 game, it isn’t so bad but I’m there all day and when I get home, I’m almost black from the dirt and not the sun. I’m glad we are playing on grass now because Id hate to be playing on synthetic all summer long. I’d die from the radiating heat.

Before you all get back to your busy lives, remember we are playing a game for fun, so go out enjoy yourself and before you leave the field make sure you pick up and throw out your garbage. Thank you and see everyone on Saturday.

Word from the Mouth: In a Cloud of Dust! edition

Word from the Mouth: In a Cloud of Dust! edition

What a week for the MFL! We played outside like we always have, but this week we had grass to play on. Only that’s not entirely true, if you played at Arthur Therrien then you still played in a cloud of dust.

Only a few little issues this week playing at Darcy McGee. We need to make sure we pick up after ourselves or we could lose the field and have to go back and play at Le Ber in the mud.

If you were there early, and by that I mean like 8:30ish, a bunch of soccer guys showed up and were expecting to play on a field that I had set up already. When I got a call saying they took down 1 of my fields I was livid, when I showed up first thing of course was taking off my shirt and see what was going on and I was ready to drop some people if needed (ed’s note: Kevin’s step 1 is always take off his shirt, no matter what he’s doing). Then I noticed Terry was there and let him handle it while I went back to setting up the field again.

The league is looking into moving games permanently to Darcy McGee from Le Ber for the remainder of the season, but it has not been confirmed yet.

Recap

Division 1

I wasn’t privileged enough to watch any of the D1 games this week, but Terry made his D1 return and had a sack, so you’ll get to hear about the Outlaws games on the Podcast. Who could I forget Willie playing on Iron Wolves and throwing a pick in the game, but yet still pulling off the upset.

Division 2

I wasn’t able to see any D2, but can tell you Marvin getting hurt playing in a different subpar league and not playing this week made a big difference. Tell me Marvin isn’t worth let’s say 65 yards 1 TD, at least 1 pick on defense, plus 2 PDs. He was probably the reason the game turned out like it did.

Division 3

TDs & Beers vs Sooners 45 (18-6)

Drops were the issue for both teams in this game. Not sure if it was 2 or 3 passes Ali dropped and at least 1 would have been a TD. Don’t worry Ali, I got your back and I’ll mention how Sydney also had a few drops, but at least you reached the endzone. Still on the drops, we had Victor who dropped a pick that he could have scored on, but instead it was dropped and a few plays later TDs & Beers scored the first points of the game. Without a doubt the biggest impact in the game came from Khalil with his 4 sacks and only giving up 6 yards rushing on 2 attempts. Even without PO at center and Leo calling the defense, TDs & Beers shut down what most think is a top tier offense.

Horde vs Iron Wolves (37-14)

I’m not saying Simon is a superstar QB who should be paid like the top dogs, but how the donkey is he going 21 of 26 with 6 TDs and no picks? I can tell you and it’s very simple, Horde have better athletes than Iron Wolves and its not even close across the board. From watching this game, I walked away feeling sympathy for Kris with his frustrations of goal line defense. Horde scored 4 TDs of less than 7 yards and on all 4 the ball was thrown to the front goal line and the defender gave up the line then didn’t attack the ball while in the air. St-Jean put up his regular numbers with 7 catches for 97 yards and 2 TDs one of 49 yards which was a 2-yard pass that he took to the house.

Phoenix vs RawSauce (30-38)

I could go two ways on this game and talk about how RawSauce was missing most of their roster and needed Simon to sub and bring them to 6 players or how Phoenix played defense like they were trying to defend a 30-point lead. Ok, now for what really happened. I was stupid and never attacked Simon knowing he was playing his third game in a row and wasn’t really moving around too much, but I know he is very good and knew if I was spot on with my pass it was going to get picked off. I threw 1 pick to Simon Coderre who made a great play jumping getting a hand on the ball and then being able to pull it back in for the pick. I don’t want to porcupine on my team and the defense since on multiple plays the defender was all over the offensive player and in good position. JF had a monster game for Phoenix scoring 4 TDs on 5 catches and totalling 77 yards. RawSauce is better than their 1-3 record just like once Phoenix gets that defense rolling will be better than their 0-2 record up to now.

Division 4

Phoenix vs CIA Fusion (18-12)

Let me start by apologizing to Amanda for taking ownership of Jason, if you want him back let me know what I have to give you to take him back. This game turned out to be really close and being in the game I felt like CIA had the advantage, they moved the ball better than Phoenix did, they were more consistent on defense than Phoenix and the difference in the game was the costly picks. Jason and Kevin both threw 3 picks, the difference was Jason’s picks all happened in the end zone and the picks Kevin threw weren’t. CIA had a good first half, but second half fell apart with 3 of 4 possessions turning into picks and the other was a turnover on downs. This will be a way different game if these teams meet again.

Bear Hood vs Mustard Tigers (45-33)

This was 2 man show for Bear Hood just like last season except this time around its Steve and Antoine doing most of the damage. In this game those 2 combined for 14 of 17 completions from Dave and 250 of 274 yards and all 6 of his TDs. Mustard Tigers might not be the same team they were last season, and they shouldn’t be as they lost their top players from then, but still Mustard Tiger have enough experience to not let this happen. Brian played well except for that effort on the pick 6 he threw where he just stuck out an arm for the sake of it. Tom score 2 TDs and 3 1-point converts, but the play of the game for Mustard Tigers had to be old man John scoring on a 27 yard streak down the sideline where I called the play when he lined up and the defender knew the play and John still ran by him caught the ball and walked in for 6. There were a few plays that Mustard Tigers should have made like a couple of easy catches that would have changed the game. Everyone needs to learn to catch the ball before turning up field, happens way too often and those are the plays that kills drives.

Division 5

Sorry I wasn’t able to catch any games from this division. One day soon, I hope. I need to see what all the excitement coming out of the division is and who I should bet on winning it.

Women

Sorry I wasn’t able to catch any games from this division either.

That is all I have in the way of recaps. If you want more, look for Terry and Willie, unless he got booted by a mop wearing a baseball cap. The worst part is it’s a Cowboys hat. Podcast will be out Wednesday night so keep an eye out for it.

Time to see if I felt you did enough to make my Stud list unless your goal was to be the Dud then showing up and playing like a punk might get you on that list.

There you have it my week 4 winners and let’s not forget about those losers. Or those players who showed up and just stood around trying to look good when we all know they don’t. I mean you all can’t be like Alex and myself standing around with your shirt off all day, get some color and think you look good. Show up, play your ass off, and hope that you did enough that week to make my list. If not try harder next time around.
