Word from the Mouth: 70s Style! edition
We have made it to the end of the season and that means playoffs for those who made it. Last week we had a few games that were very meaningful and a few that meant nothing, and I was hoping both teams would have realized that and just play to avoid anyone getting hurt.
By the end of the day the fields weren’t in good shape and players were slipping and sliding all over. If I had been playing late in the day and the game was meaningless, I wouldn’t have played, and I would have told my team the same. Years back my team was in this position, and I chose not to play, but my teammates didn’t listen and a few got hurt and couldn’t play the following week. Sometimes it’s better to be smart than worry about your stats.
Recap
Division 1
Trollers vs Iron Wolves (46-36)
Haney scored 4 TDs alone in this game and seemed unstoppable. Willie threw 2 picks to Dilan, the first one could have blown the game wide open on the first play of the second half while holding a 7-point lead, but Willie got that one right back. The second pick Dilan got was the final nail in the coffin and when the Trollers scored it put them up 2 scores and they never looked back.
Centurions vs Gros Coqs (70-18)
With Iron Wolves losing all Gros Coqs had to do was not give up 55 or more points. This seemed like it was simple and very doable. Let me mention that Dom and a few others weren’t there, and that Alexis was playing QB. I was also told that the players that were there didn’t play hard and didn’t care about playing defense. Giving up 70 is still unheard of, especially in D1.
Division 2
Jagerbomb vs Mater Chiefs (53-30)
Having watched this game, for it to only be a 23-point difference is very surprising. Owie threw 5 picks all in the first half and in the second half relied heavily on Dilan and Ashton who scored 3 more times to bring his season total to 32. Simon didn’t do anything special, but JF caught everything thrown his way and turned his 14 catches into 103 yards and 3 TDs.
Pocket Rockets vs Thunder Buddies (20-21)
This was a meaningless sloppy game and they will get to replay it next week. No matter what had happened it was already locked in that they would play again. Both teams struggled to move the ball and if it wasn’t for a few drops and slips by receivers, Pocket Rockets might have won. Late in the game Thunder Buddies scored to make it 20 all. On the convert Steve had David drop back and this made Pocket Rockets send a second rusher which allowed Remy to find the open hole in the endzone for the game winning 1-point convert.
Division 3
Double Dippers vs Douilles Molasses (41-33)
Double Dippers pulled a cheap move and brought in Farell Gnago who no one knew but looked the part of a football player and he also played like a football player. This game was better than I really expected it to be. Eric and Rich combined for 5 sacks on Felix and I feel if Felix would just throw the ball earlier and not run around, they might have won. Simon was back under center for Dippers, and he looked good throwing.
Division 4
Black Diamonds vs Cyclones (43-24)
Black Diamonds could have played spoiler by scoring over 53 points and it looked very doable. Terry had them up 25-0 at half. Second half rolled around and Elijah woke up and made a game of it winning the second half.
Villains vs Drama Club (37-19)
First half of this game was back and forth, but when the second half rolled around Villains had enough and took over the game. Fat Lamar was out there for Villains and scored 4 TDs on 6 catches that totaled 67 yards. Simon wasn’t here to throw for Drama Club, so Quentin subbed in and threw. Roxanne had a good game for Drama Club with 8 catches and 2 TDs, but it wasn’t enough.
Sooners45 vs RawSauce (42-21)
Sooners were looking to stay rolling going into the playoffs and that’s what they did by doubling up on a RawSauce team that hasn’t looked good all season. Once again teams can’t stop Diego from running, but this time Jose got a few runs in as well. On the ground Sooners had 98 yards and when you add in the 174 through the air, it’s a very hard team to stop.
Super Friends vs Iron Wolves (34-18)
Iron Wolves had a lead at half 12-6 and could have taken control of the game with them starting with the ball in the second half. Jason drove the Wolves down the field before throwing a pick to Elis who ran it back for 6 points. Second half Super Friends owned it until Iron Wolves scored late in the game to make it only a 16-point game.
Division 5
Phoenix vs Improbabies (ed’s note: is that a deliberate typo?) (34-18)
This was a fun game to play in. Matt was sick and probably should have stayed home, but without Gold there to play QB he decided to stick it out and play. Other than 2 or 3 throws that were picked off, Matt played a very good game. Phoenix moved the ball well all game and were helped by some poor tackling by the Improbabies (ed’s note: I mean, this has to be intentional, right?) defense. Both teams had subs and knew that they were almost guaranteed to play each other in the first round of the playoffs, so late in the game with Phoenix being up 2 scores we all just had fun. Alex had used all his teams’ timeouts, so I gave him control of our team’s this way they got to play a bit longer and it also bothered Marvin which was the whole point of it.
Titans vs My Ball Zack Ertz (20-33)
Going into this game the winner was guaranteed a playoff spot and the loser would have to sit around and hope for some help. Guillaume was a stud for My Ball Zack Ertz getting 10 catches for 132 yards, scoring 3 TDs, getting 1 pick and throwing a TD on the last play of the first half. Robert relied on the McMahon brother who grabbed a combined 11 catches for 142 yards and 2 TDs. The biggest surprise from this game was Jalen racking up 5 sacks on Luca and only allowing him to gain 34 yards on 14 carries.
That is all I have for you in way of recaps. Look out for a special edition of the MFL podcast this week loaded with special guests.
Studs & Duds
It’s the last week of the season and your last chance to make my list before playoffs. This week I might be a bit biased and lean towards players that helped their team secure a playoff spot or in some cases players who blew it and cost their team a playoff berth.
Studs
Division 1
- Shawn Haney had 6 catches for 76 yards, 4 TDs and 1 1point convert. He also made 3 tackles on defense.
Division 2
- Jean-Félix Daloze had 14 catches for 103 yards, 3 TDs, 1 2point convert and made 5 tackles with 1 pick on defense.
Division 3
- Simon Blais was 23 of 29 for 249 yards, 6 TDs, 1 1point convert, 2 2point converts and made 2 tackles on defense.
Division 4
- Jeremi O'Reilly did it all once again this week managing to go 16 of 19 for 193 yards, 5 TDs, 1 1point convert, ran 4 times for 67 yards, 1 TD. On defense he made 5 tackles and had 1 pick.
Division 5
- Guillaume Malo was a beast this week making sure his team would play next week. Guillaume went 1 for 1 for 29 yards and a TD as a QB. He caught 10 passes for 132 yards, 3 TDs and 1 1point convert. He also got 2 tackles and a pick on defense.
Duds
Division 1
- Gros Coqs defense for giving up 70 points and losing out on the number 1 seed.
Division 2
- Owie for throwing 5 picks in the first half versus Jagerbomb.
Division 3
- PO for playing a few snaps on defense and making it a forfeit against Iron Wolves and eliminating Bines by doing this.
Division 4
- Terry Babalis played a great game and would have been my player of the week except at half of his game mentioning how it was 25-0 and they were on their way to eliminating Cyclones by putting up 53 and not getting it done.
Division 5
- Max Rosenfeld for not being there for a win and you’re in the playoffs game.
There you have it, week 12’s winners and losers.
