Word from the Mouth: Smoking on St Jean! edition
These last 2 weekends haven’t been the best to play in, depending on your team’s time slot. I was hoping that it would get better for this week, but that doesn’t look like it will happen. I know it’s only Monday while I’m writing this, but it’s calling for rain and thunder storms all weekend. This doesn’t mean it wont change between now and then and I hope it does.
Did anyone go out on Sunday and see all that smog, worst air quality in the world. It was bad but compared to how NYC looked a few weeks back, it was nothing (ed’s note: literally one sentence after saying it was the worst in the world…). After Jon forcing me and a few other refs to work in those conditions we’re all suing him if we get cancer, and it doesn’t matter what kind it is (ed’s note: seems fair). I figure the brain tumor I end up with still counts and proves I have one to begin with.
Hope everyone survived all the drinking they did to celebrate St-Jean. Some teams (okay, only one team) in Brossard came to the field on Sunday still hungover and if you didn’t already know it was 28-3.
Week 7 Recap
Division 1
Outlaws vs Trollers (39-35)
Outlaws jumped out to a 14-0 though it could easily be tied if Svetna didn’t pick off a pass in the endzone. Later in the game I made a joke with Marvin about the logo on his shorts and how it was supposed to be Wonder Woman, and on the next play he catches a 45-yard pass that looked out of reach even with him at full speed, but I guess his lasso came in handy on that one. I don’t know where Steve gets it, but it just seems like with under a minute he always finds a way to march the field and score before the half ends. He did it to end the first half this week with 14 seconds left. Second half Trollers picked it up and made it a game and even took the lead 35-33 with 21 seconds left. You guessed it, Steve pulled it off once again finding Svetna on 35-yard play and putting the ball on the 5-yard line with 1 play left. Steve then found Svetna open in the endzone for the game winner.
Division 2
Pocket Rockets vs Nice TDs (14-36)
Everyone knew this wasn’t going to be a good game early in the week as Pocket Rockets were missing too many players and it would turn out to be one of those game you just play and forget. PO started the game by throwing a pick 6 to Demario. The first half was dominated by Nice TDs with it being 30-6 at half. Pocket Rockets just couldn’t figure out how to stop Demario as he threw 3 TDs, ran 2 in and had 2 picks and took 1 for 6. Both teams traded TDs in the second half and that’s all that happened.
Division 3
Mustard Tigers vs Phoenix (20-14)
When this game was played, it was the worst weather of the day and it showed by the number of bad passes dropped balls or in my case the ball just slipping and sliding out of my hands all game long. The game opened with Tom letting me know he was out for revenge for last season when our teams played. Phoenix was smart on defense and had Nick play man on Tom which worked the first half, but Brian was smart and figured it out after a few drives. The only points in the first half were on big plays. Sean from Mustard Tigers had a 41-yard TD where he made a few players miss tackles and Phoenix scored on a pick 6 by Rob. Half time rolled around, and the score was 8-7 Phoenix. Late in the game with Phoenix holding a 14-13 lead, Brian threw a pass that was in Cory’s hands and in dry conditions it’s a pick all day, but when he squeezed the ball it slid out and into the hands of Jie for the winning score. Phoenix got the ball with 3 plus minutes left, it was plenty of time to go down and score. It all came down to a fourth down where Nick ran a quick out, and the ball was thrown to him, and it was dropped (ed’s note: blaming the receiver, true leadership on display). He says it was behind him, but it was right on his body and needed to be since Tom was playing short and crashing on the play. In better conditions and not playing on a fractured leg this is a totally different game, especially with the rosters that were there this week. But at the end of the day Mustard Tigers played a better game and earned the win.
Division 4
Super Friends vs Bines Low Fat (26-33)
This game started out with a bang. JF hits Thomas on short route and Thomas takes it 45 yards for the score on the very first play of the game, it took Oliver about 3 seconds to respond with a deep ball to Alex for 45 yards and in less than a minute each team had scored once. On the next Super Friends drive Oliver threw a pick 6 to Michael which he didn’t see him as he made a great jump on the ball. With nothing seeming to work for Oliver, he took it upon himself to get them back in it and took off running on first down and he just kept making players miss with a juke here and a juke there and topped it off with a spin before reaching the endzone for a 45-yard TD. Before half, JF was trying to widen the lead 5 play scoring drive after Simon picked off a pass as Super Friends were driving. Half time score was 26-13. In the second half they traded punts and picks for a while, but Oliver was able to tie it up at 26 with 8:30 left. After the defense was playing great in the second half when they need a stop and the ball, they allowed Bines Low Fat to put a drive together along with a TD and convert. Now down 7, Super Friends were moving the ball and with 2 plays left Oliver had his pass picked off by David to seal the win and end the game.
Division 5
Phoenix vs Chili Hotdogs (37-34)
This game wasn’t pretty for either team. Simon was subbing at QB for Chili Hotdogs and in the first half nothing could go wrong for him. He was able to pick the defense apart with drags from Hugo who picked up lots of yards after the catch as well as throwing it up to Gustavo Andres Cruz for big chunks of yards. I can tell you from guarding Gustavo he has strong hands and can go up and high point the ball. On one of his TDs I hit the ball, pulled his arm, and then tried to rip the ball out and yet he still walked away with the TD. As for the defense for Chili Hotdogs, they just seemed to be in the right place at the right time all first half. They picked me off 2 times and other than one play from Gregory, they played a perfect half. To start the second half the score was 20-6 and right off the bat Kenny takes a pass 45 yards for an easy score. At half we talked and made a few adjustments on defense, and it paid off by forcing a quick 3 and punt from Chili Dogs, but they got it back after a pick by Cam. Simon made us pay for that pick extending the lead to 27-13. After that Phoenix took control of the game with a score followed by a pick another score and another pick and another score. Suddenly Phoenix was up 31 to 27 with 5 minutes left. Simon had plenty of time and knew what he needed to do to pull off the win. He used the intermediate routes to march down and take the lead back and left under 2 minutes left. After a quick check down to Roxanne for a few yards, I hit Gregory on a quick slant that he took 37 yards for a score and giving us back the lead. On the last drive I made the move to put James at rush because of his height and he was able to force quick throws and knocked a few balls down on the last play of the game from the 14-yard line Simon had to get rid of the ball fast and it was caught but only for 2 yards and the game ended.
That is it for this week, hope you enjoyed.
Studs & Duds
I’m running a bit late on getting my article done this week, so I’ll just jump to what you all want to know and see.
Studs
Division 1
- Dominic Lefort was a terror this week going 29 of 32 for 314 yards, 7 TDs, 1 1point convert, 3 2point converts as well as throwing 1 pick. Dom also ran twice for 40 yards, 1 TD, he also made an appearance on defense making 1 tackle.
Division 2
- Demario Cooper did a bit of everything this week, going 24 of 30 for 220 yards, 3 TDs and 1 pick. He also ran 6 times for 28 yards and 2 TDs. On defense all he had was 2 picks and scored on 1 of them.
Division 3
- Geoffroy Vigneault had 4 catches for 66 yards and 4 TDs and made 3 tackles on defense. I need to know how many of those catches were 1 handed.
Division 4
- Julian Sablowski had himself a game in his teams second game of the day. Julian made 7 catches for 110 yards, 4 TDs and 2 1point converts. On defense all he did was make 3 tackles and have 1 pick.
Division 5
- Gregory Chevry going into the game had 2 catches for 9 yards on the season. In this game he had 9 catches for 126 yards and 4 TDs. Defensively he made 5 tackles.
Duds
Division 1
- The Trollers defense for giving up game winning scores on the last play of 2 different games this weekend.
Division 2
- Owie for his 3 picks and not having that magic to get it done in another close game on the last drive.
Division 3
- Jason Armenti for being a stat lady of the night and scoring with 26 seconds left while having a 17-point lead at the time.
Division 4
- Cyclones for putting Alex at QB when he is your best receiver.
Division 5
- Eduardo Fuentes Contreras 5 picks and your vacation plans get you on the list.
Hope you’re happy with this week’s list. Some players make it very easy to put them on the list and then you have teams that just can’t figure it out and might need a wake-up call. If you made the list congratulations, if not try harder next week.
